Ueing intimately associated with
pecans almost from youth It is a
wonder to me why. people do not
show a greater interest in growing
pecan orchards and Improving na-
tural groves so as to make them bear
the valuable paper shells. It has been
demonstrated that the pecan will
grow on upland rolling prairie soils
and produce large fine nuts. An or-
chard of somo 200 trees was planted
about twelve to fifteen years ago a
to 30 feet apart and cotton planted
between and the pecans cultivated
"'like the cotton and they will grow
faster by It. "When the trees grow
so large as to shade the ground to
prevent cotton from growing you
will not have to plant cotton' or any
other annual crop. Your money crop
will grow on trees and you will have
a merry picking.

.ur. cnandier has engaged me to
topwork all the trees not yet bearing
I have fully demonstrated In my own
grove as In many others over the
state that topworked trees will bear
fine paper shells In two years. But
very few have trees to be topworked.
so they must begin on the ground by
planting the pecan. Here manv think
U useless to plant nuts they will
never live to see bear but it does not
take so long as you think. Of course
the little trees left to take their nat
ural course are slow about bearing
straggle along and bear at different
ages beginning often at seven years
and running to twenty-five years or
ipore before the last ones begin-to
bear. Hero again 1 have demonstrat
ed that If tho pecan is planted where
t Is wanted to grow and the little
tree Is taken caro of and then budded
from a tree already in bearing at
wo or three years of age In two
moro years every tree In the orchard
will bear pecans that Is the fifth year
after the nut is planted.
J. O. White of Coleman has sever
al trees as large as a man's thumb
at the ground and as tall as a man's
breast that bore and ripened a crop
of fine paper shell pecans this year.
Tho trees were three years old when
budded now five. Now somo will
ask tho very natural question 'Mr
you Intend to bud why go to the ex-
pense of buying paper shells to
plant?" For the same reason that if
you wish to grow rapidly and ma-
ture early you would buy some fine
breed of cattle or hogs and not any
old longhorn Texas cow or rrazorback
sow. The same law applies In plant
breeding. The thin shelf full Iternel
pecan will start off a moro vigorous
young treo that will grow faster and
mature earlier.
There Is no farm or town lot In
the state of Texas but what will grow
pecan trees. Some of them of course
are bettor adapted to pecan growing
