MAYOR'S UPDATE:
City News and Comments
By Larry Hol^en
The prayers of the City
Council, City staff, and
citizens of Sachse are with
the victorious men and
women of America and our
allies in Kuwait, Iraq and the
Persian Gulf.

One of the hottest topics on
the minds and tongues of
Sachse citizens nowadays is
recycling, especially the city-
wide curbside recycling
program that commences
May 1.
Residents want to know
exactly how the program is
going to work.
Starting in April, Sachse's
new solid refuse contractor,
Laidlaw Waste Systems, Inc.,
will mail out detailed informa-
tion on what kinds of
recyclable material will be
taken during the regular,
once-a-week pickups. The re-
cyclables include aluminum
and metal cans, newspapers,
glass bottles (without caps),
plastic milk and drink bottles.
Also during April, blue
recycle bins will be provided
residents free of charge.
There's no need for time-
consuming, messy sorting.
Just put everything recyclable
in the bin and place every-
thing else in your regular
trash container.
Once a week, on one of
your regular trash pick-up
days, you simply set out your
bin beside your regular
garbage. Laidlaw will collect
them both at the same time.
A special truck will be used
for the recyclables, with the
truck operator separating the
items at curbside.
All proceeds earned from
the sale of recyclable mater-
ials collected in Sachse during
the first year of the curbside
program will be used to
improve park facilities.
After the program's initial
year, a citizens committee
will discuss how the next
year's recycling profits will
best be spent. The committee
then will make its recommen-
dations to the Council.

The next phase of upgrading
Salmon Park facilities has
begun. The new restrooms
that will be constructed near
the recently-completed pavil-
ion have gone out for bids.
The restrooms should be fin-
ished in a couple of months.
After the bids come in on the
restroom construction, we'll
then move on to purchasing
the playground equipment.
The final phase of upgrading
the pavilion area will be the
addition of a multi-use field
for soccer and football,
complete with movable goal
posts.
