DESMOND WALLS ALLEN
As editor of the Arkansas Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Desmond Walls
Allen displays a writer's skill at elucidating andd educating. This ability to
transmit information in a pleasant and effective manner carries over into her
lecturing and she deftly weaves humor, insight, and practical instruction into
each presentation.
Among her many topics, Desmond Walls Allen most enjoys those that help a wide
range of audiences. "A Problem Solving Strategy" and "Twentieth Century Research"
focus on methodology while "Maps for Genealogists" illuminates a tool
essential to every research project. Desmond's experience as an instructor
for a computer consulting firm is evident in "Publice Domain Land Records",
which highlights the latest in indexing projects and computerization of first
purchasers of public land. "Confederate Military and Pensions Records" addresses
the complexities of locating and interpreting these valuable records.
Desmond Walls Allen's credentials include a BSE (magna cum laude) which entails
12 hours in adult education and an MA in history. She is past-president of the
Arkansas Genealogical Society and the author/compiler or 127 books on Arkansas
source material. In 1993, Desmond was awarded teh Grahams Thomas Smallwood, Jr.
Award of Merit by the Association of Professional Genealogist for her compilation,
Directory of Professional Genealogists - 1993.
As coordinator for the advanced problem solving course conducted at the Genealogical
Institute of Texas and a non-credit faculty member (genealogy) at the
University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Desmond has a solid foundation in lecturing.
She has been the featured lecturer at all-day workshops in Arkansas, Texas,
Missouri, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Louisiana, Colorado and a presenter at the
five national conferences. In 1993, at the FGS Conference in St. Louis,
attendees rated Desmond among the ten most effective speakers.
