New National Guard unit to headquarter at Camp Swift
By Cecil Johnson
Recruiting efforts will begin
soon in the Bastrop County area for
part of a new National Guard
brigade to be permanently located
at Camp Swift.
According to Major Ed Koman-
dosky of the 100th Public Affairs
Detachment of the Texas Army
National Guard, the move, includ-
ing the relocation and redesigna-
tion of several units of the Texas
Army National Guard, is part of a
major reorganization announced
last week by Maj. Gen. James T.
Dennis, adjutant general of Texas.
Komandosky said the location of
Company A of the 386th Engineer
Battalion in Bastrop is expected to
{;enerate about a half million dol-
ars a year to the economy of the
area.
He said it is hoped that approxi-
mately 70 of the 77 guardsmen
who will make up the detachment
can be recruited
in Bastrop County.
"We're talking about recruiting
in Bastrop, Elgin, Paige, all of that
area, McDade, and possibly even
Smithville," said Komandosky.
He said there will probably be a
recruiter assigned to the area in the
near future and it is anticipated
recruiting for the unit will be com-
pleted within a year.
"We're talking about 70 or so
part time jobs for these guys down
there and a lot of people like en-'
gineering units because they pro-
vide military skills that can be
civilian oriented," said
Komandosky.
He said recruits can learn to
operate heavy equipment, build
bridges and other construction
skills at the military's expense that
they can probably use later to get
civilian jobs.
Komandosky said the role of the
386th Engineer battalion in war-
time "is to go out and support the
advance of either infantry or
armor."
"In other words if they come to
a river and can't get across their
job is to throw up a temporary
bridge or if they're retreating, their
job is to blow up the bridge and de-
lay the enemy," he said.
Komandosky said the reorgani-
zation is necessary because Texas
has gained an additional 1,400
troop spaces with the addition last
December of the 36th Brigade to
the Texas Guard.
He said the new brigade is part
of the 50th Armored Division,
headquartered in New Jersey.
"We're not moving the people
we're simply moving the unit, the
flag of the headquarters, so what
we are going to do is we will have
a small nucleus like one or two full-
time people and maybe an officer
or two, but we're going to have to
recruit in the Bastrop area the rest
of those people to fill up that unit,"
said Komandosky.
He said the 386th Engineer Bat-
talion trains a lot at Camp Swift
and the establishment of a new unit
there "will assist in the overall
utilization of Camp Swift."
"Basically what we're doing is
switching around a bunch of units
and what that will do is provide the
386th Engineer Battalion with a
unit that will be at a training site
they go to regularly and that should
help their training," he said.
Komandosky said other reasons

Park hearings promised
Bastrop County officials will
hold public hearings before mov-
ing to take over operation of two
Lake Bastrop parks from the Low-
er Colorado River Authority,
County Judge Jimmy Copeland
said Tuesday.
He made the announcement fol-
lowing a two-hour tour of the parks
with LCRA officials. Precinct 4
Commissioner Jim V. Mogonye
and Precinct 1 Commissioner-elect
Johnny Sanders.
No date for a commissioners
court workshop session on the
parks or for a public hearing has
been set.
Copeland said he believes the
county can operate the North Shore
Park and South Shore Park at lower
cost than LCRA and can probably
bring in additional revenue from
concessions and other activities.
But the judge said he will not
push for the county to take over if
there is no public support. It ap-
pears the county could operate the
parks on a break even basis, he
said.
LCRA figures show the authori-
ty has, lost about $100,000 a year
on Lake Bastrop park operations.

the new unit will be located at
Camp Swift are because there are
adequate facilities at Camp Swift
to house the soldiers and the army
believes there is a recruiting poten-
tial in this area.
He said the 36th Brigade was
moved fTom New Jersey because
of recruiting problems there.
"Texas has been running at
about 105 percent strength, in other
words recruiting has been pretty
good here," said Komandosky.
"Recruiting is terrible up there,
they're running at about 60 or 65
percent and so it's going to make
everybody do better if they...move
the positions down to Texas and we
can recruit for them," he said.
Komandosky said after moving
the new brigade to Texas an annu-
al economic impact of somewhere
around $20 to $21 million a year
is expected for the state. He said

Community Transit service, the
transit program of Combined Com-
munity Action, is seeking public-
input for a new park & ride com-
muter service which will allow
Bastrop , Smithville area citizens
to commute to and from Austin on
a daily basis for $85 per month.
Community Transit is interest-
ed in offering residents who com-
mute to and from work in the
Austin area a safe and reliable
transportation system, said Sam
Wolfenson, director of Community
Transit. He said he is available to
provide park & ride information at
1-800-284-7433.
The Bastrop Chamber of Com-
merce is also supporting the new
service and will be available to an-
swer questions regarding reserving
seats on the 15-passenger com-
muter van.
Community Transit has been
operating the park & ride service
in Elgin during the past four years
and it has proved a cost effective
and successful alternative to driv-
ing and parking in Austin every
day, organizers said.

in addition to the salaries for the
part-time guardsmen there will also
be other benefits to the community.
"There's one other thing that ev-
ery little community needs to un-
derstand, when they have a guard
unit that's kind of like an insurance
policy because not only do we en-
courage guard units to be civic
minded and participate in local
events as regulations allow ..we
encourage them to be good
citizens," said Komandosky.
"Also if a natural disaster hap-
pens they've got a pool of man-
power that can be called upon
through the governor in times of
j emergency," he said.
