FRONT COVER: A lonely carriage stands in front of Austin's Millett Opera
House, once the social and entertainment center of the capital city. Famous
actors, musicians, the state legislature, political conventions, high school gradu-
ating classes, and social and civic groups all sought the facilities of the 800-seat
auditorium. Erected in 1870, this historic theater now houses Maverick-Clarke

BACK COVER: The 1930's and 1940's marked the highpoint of the motion
picture industry in America. When this photograph of Dallas' Elm Street
theatrical district was made in the early 1940's, seven movie houses were in
