PROGRAM IN TEXAS, 1939-1989

Texas State Historical AssociationIT WAS FIFTY years ago this year that Walter
Prescott Webb established the educational pro-
grams of the Texas State Historical Association.
When Webb founded the Junior Historians in 1939,
it was an experiment for the Junior Historians of
Texas was the first organization of its kind in the
nation. In the first issue of The Junior Historian
magazine Webb wrote that the purpose of JuniorHistorians "will be to foster in young people a love
of their own state by developing their knowledge
of the state." He also added that "We are making
the experiment because we believe that Texas boys
and girls are competent to collect the history, tradi-
tion and lore of their separate communities and to
write out the results of their investigations in a way
worthy of publication." Since Webb wrote thoseJunior Historians and sponsors on the steps of the Governor's Mansion, April 19, 1941, during
the Second Annual Junior Historian Meeting.
