SOUTHWESTERN TIMES
December 7, 1944
SPORTS
DIGEST
By Burt Rule
Well, the final skirmish on the
football front ended up okeh for
Houston in general and the South-
west area in particular. Lamar won
clear-cut title as champion of Dis-
trict 13 AA and Rice's concluding
battle of the season ended in a well-
margined victory.

The war of the gridiron is not
over for Lamar, but it is curtains
for Rice unless some unannounced
development should place the Owls

in the Oil Bowl. The Redskins have
a date with the Port Arthur Yellow-
jackets on December 9 which,
cording to all the experts, will be
the end of the trail for them.
This writer happens to be one ol
the "eggsperts" who doesn't entire-
ly agree with this unanimous pre-
diction. I haven't much on which to
base this disagreement as the
son's records, quality and quantity
of manpower, and even the sit
the game, point a grim finger to a
Lamar defeat. But on the other
hand, notwithstanding, etc., the La
mar club has shown steady im-
provement since its initial game of
the season (Port Arthur 40, Lamar
0) and I have never seen a high
school team display more fire and
determination than our red-suited
players have shown on occas
when all the chips were down. If
there are no injuries I believe they

The deciding conflict with Milby
was the most colorless, ineffective
effort we have seen Lamar put out
all year. Here's hoping they were
saving up for the big December 9
game when all the chips will be
down for sure.
Benchwarmers Score
Rice won its game with South-
western with a lineup composed at
all stages of the game of former
benchwarmers. Two of the touch-
downs were made by a 10-year-old
Freshman named McBride, who to
this writer's best recollection had
never been in a Rice game lineup
before. The other was by Ander-
son, a recent Navy transfer, who
had played a total of 10 minutes in
prior games. But all of these "rag-
knots" did right well by themselves
and the few hardy Rice followers
who witnessed the game were well
pleased that Coach Neely gave
these forgotten men a break.
How did you like the all-District
and all-City selections of the
dailies? Just as a matter of per-
sonal record we wrote down our
selections last week and they coin-
cided with the Post's and differed
with the Chronicle's in only one
position. We gave a tackle post to
Silber of San Jacinto- We believe
the first team of these all-star
selections would give any club in
the state fits.
AP Choice Okeh
The AP all-Southwest Confer-
ence won our entire approval
(which I am sure will be good news
to those gentlemen). We differed
only on one post. We gave the
ter position to Jack Sachse of Texas
and placed Henry Ford of Arkan
;n a guard slot. This latter boy
a terror on defense, particu-
larly on the day the Razorbacks
played Rice.
The selection of Campise and
Arnold of St. Thomas on the all-
City team was eminently correct,
These boys were standouts in all
games played and would have un-
doubtedly won berths on the all-
District if their school had been a
member.
The boss says this is all the rooir
there is. So we'll wind up by say-
ing:
Good Luck Lamar! Don't pay any
attention to newspaper predictions.
Port Arthur, and then read
the newspapers!

Uncle Harry, Next
Little Theatre Play,
Starts December 12
An engrossing evening of skillful
assassination will be offered to
theatregoers when the Houston Lit-
tle Theatre's second production of
the season, Thomas Job's psycho-
logical murder drama, "Uncle
Harry," opens a six night run on
December 12 at the Chelsea Blvd.
playhouse.
Uncle Harry and Lettie, the char-
acters portrayed by Joseph Schild-
kraut and Eve LeGallienne in the
New York presentation, will be
played by Sam Johnson and Mary
Alice Krahl, both of whom have
appeared in many plays on local
stages. Others in the cast are
Helene Susman, Alice Word John-
son, Leslie Hunt, Elizabeth Mow-
ery, Josephine Alessandro, A. E.
Jimmy Terflinger, Wm. Denny,
Horace Miller, Ivan J. Fenn and
Frank H. Terry.
All Little Theatre productions
arc open to the public and reserva-
tions may be made at the theatre
from 10 to 5 daily beginning De-
cember 7. The downtown box office
at Battelstein's will be open Decem-
ber 11, 12 and 13. Because of the
great demand for seats for the
theatre's first show, a new policy of
running a play for six nights in-
stead of five has been adopted.
