STIRPES MARCH 1997
The President's Page
Dear TSGS Members, Partner Societies, and Friends,
The Board of Directors of the Texas State Genealogical Society met at the Texas State
Library in Austin on 8 February 1997. We had an excellent meeting and many items of
interest to you were discussed.
First, the Audit Committee reported that our Treasurer, Betty Dunquez, had the books
complete for the annual audit and that the financial status of the society was the best that
it had ever been. This status was due to our Texas First Families Project, our Annual
Conference, and the many new members which we have gained.
Response to Texas First Families Certificates has been really great. To date, there have
been 4,146 applications. TSGS now owns nine new 4-drawer file cabinets in which the
information is stored, waiting for its permanent home in a library. The Board voted to
keep this certificate program open indefinitely. Lineages will be included in the proposed
book until the material is ready for the publisher. The Board also voted to remove the
TSGS membership requirement from the Texas Pioneer and Gone to West Texas
Certificates. All three certificates are open to any persons who wish to apply.
Our new project for 1997 and 1998 will be to assist Partner Societies in having all of their
quarterlies or some of their publications filmed for microfiche. Partner societies will
receive up to $ 100.00 on the cost of this process. I encouraged Coryell County
Genealogical Society to preserve their quarterlies in this manner. Their project has been
completed and they are selling the copies as a fund-raising project. Microfiche can be
stored easily and space preserved in libraries, and the process is inexpensive. Requirements
for this grant have been referred to a committee of Doris Cozart, Lynda Breeding, and Pam
White. Details will be mailed to Partner Societies.
TSGS is a cooperating organization for the Annual Conference of the Federation of
Genealogical Societies in September in Dallas, Texas at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The
society will sponsor a luncheon on Friday, 5 September. Richard Hooverson will speak on
"Sam Houston's Fateful Decision: Sex, Politics, Tennessee, and Texas." Make your plans
now to attend this national conference.
The Annual Conference for TSGS will be in Lubbock, Texas on 7 and 8 November, 1997,
at the Holiday Inn Lubbock Plaza. Put this on your calendar so that you will not miss the
activities which we plan for this meeting. This should be a great conference.
