A dear friend of the
Register dropped by last
week to share some
good news with us. A
Black man was appoint-
ed director of Public
Safety for the city of
Columbus, Ohio. We
would like to past this
feat along to you.
Columbus, Ohio-The
husband of former San
Antonian, Mrs. Jimmie
Joyce Morrison Mont-
gomery, has been ap-
pointed director of the
city's Division of Public
Safety.
Alphonso C. Mont-
gomery was appointed
by Columbus mayor*
elect Dana G. Rinehart.
The 56-year-old Mont-
gomery has extensive
background in both mil-
itary and state govern-
ment service, having re-
tired from the Intelli-
gence branch of the
Army in 1969 with the
rank of Lieutenaut Col-
onel.
Montgomery, ia a nat-
tive of Shrevei
where his father and
mother were associated
with a Baptist educat-
ional institute. When
the institute exper-
ienced financial crisis
during the big Depress-
ion of the 1930's, the
family moved to Texas.
Both parents then
taught in the public
school system*
After high school at
which he "proudly"
served as the valedic-
torian of the graduat-
ing class, he enrolled
in Prairie View A & M
University.
He also enrolled in
ROTC, and that proved
to have been a major
turning point in his life.
Upon graduating with
a bachelor's degree, he
was commissioned a sec-
ond lieutenant in the
Army in 1946*. With his
military career launched
in the infantry, he sub-
sequently attended in-
fantry Officers Training
School. After spotting
a fellow soldier sporting
a combat emblem on his
uniform, Montgomery
said it inspired him to
volunteer for combat
duty in Korea. During
his Korean duty, he
served as a platoon lead
er in combat in which
he was awarded the
Bronze Star.
Montgomery, his wife,
Jimmie, and two of
their three sons, Bryant,
26, and Scott, 17,
reside in Columbus.,
Their senior son, Mic
heal, 27, lives in Dallas.
