GAMBLEB3 ACQTITTED ,
Chicago, January 12.—The trial
of tbe Hdukins brothers before
Justicc Meech yesterday for keep-
ing a gambling house resulted iu
a verdict of aojquittal, Ii required
tbe jury two miuutes to agret ou a
verdict and fifteen to sign their
names to it. As
announced the Hankins boys

words. Rwbert Law, who instigated
the case, aghast at tbe result, and

tnaohauical work he was a genius.
At the making of his will six
witnesses, including his brother
Andrew, Dr. Johnson, of East
Machia?, and Dr. Hunter, of Maoh-

eister's will, from wliom he inher-

package of bonds, used as symbol
of the property, were laid on the
table. Pointing to the will and
the bonds, Dr. Johnson made an
imitatiou of writing, and with a
questioning look asked if he
suould write the will, Horatio
had leaared by long practice to
read upon the lips many words.
He nodded assent. Tuen Dr.
Johnson imitated death, pointed to
the old will, the bonds, the blaiiK

—An old bachelor was rather taken
back a day or two ago, as follows: Pick-
ing up a book, he exclaimed, upon Beeing

at the feet of a woman. "Before I woolo
ever kneel to a woman, 1 would encircle
my neck with a rope and Btretch it."
And then turning to a young woman, he
inquired: ''Do you not think it would
be the best thing I could do?" "It
would, undoubtedly be the best for the
woman." was the sarcastic reply.'
