When skies are chill and leaden,
And trom the dismal street
The tempest's murmurs deaden
The sound of passing feet;
When wild gusts seize tho shutter
And shake the loosened pane, *
And dies to darkness utter
The dreary day of rain;
Out o'er the nightfall stealing,
As o'er a troubled breast
1 he old church-organ pealing
Its twilight hymn of rest,
Sends forth a message holy
Unto the listening ear,
Bidding the tried »oul fully
Yield up hen-elf in prayer.
Oh. then I fancy heaven
Some echo gives release,
And falls upon the even
A moment's pause of peace!
As lioatstrom dim St. Mary's
Unto the listening ear,
The solemn benediction,
iu accents sweet arid clear.
And when those unseen fingers
Waken the well-known chords
For me an old spell lingers
In the familiar words;
Recalling angel yoices
From out tlie past again,
Which d ie to siience, only
As dies the long "Anieu !"
And oh, T love t» hsar it—
That organ peal of praise !
Whose music soothes the spirit
On eves of saddest days;
When He, who hushed the tumult
Of far-otl' (ialilee,
Speaks to the restless bosom,
As to a wayward sea.
