Canadians third grade pupils
of the Baker school rccelvod their
first Spanish books Tuesday and
are now struggling with more
now words than they had
thought existed
This years fourth grade stud
cnts arc now on their second
jear of Spanish and many arc
growing to love tills beautiful
language of our good neighbors
to the south
By the time these lucky child-
ren of the state of Texas reach
the eighth grade they will have
a good sound knowledge of the
foreign language most useful to
citizens In this part of the United
States
The Spanish pupils of the
high school while attempting a-
very difficult task In trying to
learn a new language In only
two years time are getting
along nicely thanks to the ef-
forts of one of the best teachers
of Spanish this city has ever
been able to boast Miss Bonnie
Jean Smith
Too few people have taken ad
vantage here of the opportunity
to take Into their homes and
study with the best teachers In
the world the Mexican workers
working here temporarily for the
Santa Fe As this paper proplv
esled nearly two years ago the
study of Spanish Is becoming in-
creasingly more Important to
the citizens of Texas And these
young men born and raised in
Old Mexico far to the south of
the border speak Spanish as it
should be spoken Unfortunately
now however It Is too late to
try to study with them as
the government Is sending them
hack to their homes for good
there being no further need of
their services since the termin-
ation of the war
This week our thanks go to our
school superintendent Dcane D
Fletcher for starting off the
new weekly feature wc are in-
augurating It was especially
nice of him to consent to write
this week for with all hls othcr
duties he has been taking over
the classes of L J Wilkin who
reslgneJ last Saturday
We hope to have someone
write a guest editorial every
week If you ever felt like sit-
ting down and writing about
local conditions or just things
In general now is your chance
to do It A lot of things should
be done around here Whats
jour Idea
We have an Idea that a lot of
people hesitate to turn In items
of news because they feel that
there may be a charge for print-
ing them Absolutely no charge
Is ever made for printing news
items
ArU what Is a news Item
Its those little paragraphs about
people that you like to read Re-
member names make the news
And everyone could turn In a lot
of news each week If they would
And If they did think what an
Interesting paper this county
would have
You are not expected to labor
over the Items you turn In to
the paper Just let us know who
what when where why and
how Its the editors Job to write
Jt up They havent been any-
thing to brag about wc know
but this editor has been writing
up local marriages deaths acci-
dents and whatnots for more
than seven years So dont fall
to turn something In to the
paper because you think you
have to get some one to write it
up lor you
Hemphill countys war chest
goal this year Is 347700 It Is
certainly for a Worthy cause
But It looks like wc may fail
to reach our goal this time
What a terrible blot on our fine
recprd that would be Mr Abra-
ham says that the county Is still
short 5140000 If you have in-
tended to contribute but Just
failed to get around to It do
