English Gold, by an act of Congress, March 3d, 1843, is a lcgn1
tender at 94 cts. and G mills per dwt. French do. at 92 cents 9 mill-

Doubloons and parts of Doubloons are, many of them, light, and
consequently not saleable. A Doubloon should weigh the same as a
good dollar of two halves.
Counterfeit Gold (American) is in circulation, so well done as to
pass through most hands without detection. The best mode of de-
tecting is by throwing the piece upon a hard surface ; the genuine

case has filed his affidavit in this office, setting forth that Wm. Bu-
chanon, the defendant in this case, is a transient poison, whose resi-
dence is unknown to the plaintiff in this suit, and that the ordinary
process of law cannot be served upon him. These are therefore to
command vou to cause publication to be made in the Texas Demo-
crat, a papei published in the City of Au tin, for three successive
weeks, citing the said Wm. Buchanon to-be and appear before me at
my office in the Town of San Marcos, on the 7th day of April next,

plea of debt, due on account, for nine dollars and thirty-five cents.

HYDRAULIC CEMENT
THE undersigned have commenced the manufacture of Hydraulic
Cement, on the Guudalunpe river, about four miles west of Se-
guin, where they will be prepared to furnish it at all times, in quan-
tities to suit purchasers.
As we manufacture two descriptions of Cement, one suitable for
cisterns, aud the other for roofing and flooring bouses, persons who
send for it should inform us what kind they desire.
We arc satisfied, from sufficient experiments made bv us, that our
Cement for house roofs and floors, is superior to any article that can
be obtained from any other place.
A supply will be kept constantly on hand by Messrs. VANCE &,
BROS., who arc our agent-? for the sale of it in San Antonio. It
will be furnished there at the same price as at the mill, with the cost
of transportation added.
Price for the roofing and flooring Cement, at the rate of one dol-
lar and thirty-seven and a half cents per bushel; for Cistern Cement,
one dollar and fifteen cents per bushel.

To the Sheriff of said county Greeting:
In the name and by the authority of the State of Texas.
YOU are hereby commanndrd to summon Cornelius Lane to be and
appear before the Hon. the Distrirt Court, to beholden in and for
said county of Travis, on the fourth Mouday after the first Monday in
March next; then, and there to answer the petition of liannnh Alex
ander administratrix of the estate of Amos Alexander, deceased, ex
hibi'.cd against him; which petition states, that the said Hannah, as
administratrix as aforesaid, on the lGth day of December, A. D. 1840,
obtained a judgment for five hundred and eight dollars and twenty-
four cents, principal debt, and interest and costs of suit thereon,
against the' said Lane and one Dwight C. Gilmore; nnd, at the same
time and place, obtained a decree of said court, foreclosing a mort-
ga"e gien by said Gilmore and Lane, on the north-east quarter of
league No. 22, situated on Wilbarger's creek in said county of Travis,
and known as the head-right of Amos Alexander, to secuie the pay-
ment of the debt oh whirl: said judgment was rendered; and also, an
order directing said land to be sold to satisfy said judgment; but that
said iudgment and older have never been executed, and that no part
of said judgment has ever been paid; that the suit is brought to revive
said judgment nnd decree, that execution may iassic thereon.
And as it nppcnr3 from the affidavit of John Hancock, Esq., attor-
ney for the plaintiff in said cause, that the. said Cornelius Lane resides
beyond the limits of this State; you are, therefore, hereby comtnnr.dr-d
to summon the said Lane, by making publication of this citation in
some newspaper published in this county, for four weeks previous to
the return day hereof. Herein fail not, but make return of this writ,
as the law directs.

1. Subscribers who do not give express notice to tha contrary, are
considered wishing to continue their subscription.
2. If subscribers oitler the discontinuance of their papers, the pu-
blisher may continue to send them till all that is due be paid.
3. If subscribers neglect or refuse to take their papers from the
office to which they arc directed, they are held responsible till thev
have settled their bill, and ordered their papers discontinued.

subscriber to a periodical failed to notify the editor to discontinue the

A year or two since, the Circuit Court of Pennsylvania decided
"That where a Fostmater failed to notify the publishers of newspa-
pers that their papers were not lifted or taken out of the office, he
rendered himself liable for the subscription.

The description should state the name of the original grantee, and
whether it be a Head-right, Bounty, donation. Government Grant or
Scrip claim; and should designate particularly the number of acroi
owned by him, its locality and boundary, according to the description
in bis Deed, and under what government the title emanated.
By adopting this suggestion, tax-payers will, in future, meet with
no difficulty in settling their taxes at this office, as it will furnish the
means for the ready and perfect identification of each tract of lsnd to
rendered ; and at the same time that it will facilitate greatly the pay-
ment of taxes, it will Iso acquaint the Assessors of ihe ownership of
the property, which cannot, with any degree of correctness, be as-
certained from the records of the county, a but few have their patents
recorded, and even the deeds of sale from one individual to another
are often neglected to be made a matter of record in the countv

which the land is at present situated, owing to the organization of a
huge number of new counties, within the original limits of the obi

Juno of each year, the notice should be transmitted during the fiist

Letters. For o single letter, not exceeding half an ounce, (nv-
oirriupois) sent not exceeding 300 miles, 5 cents; sent over 300

same rate of postage ; and when advertised, 2 cents on euch Iettur,
or four cents if the advertising costs so much additional.
For drop letters, not to be mailed, 2 cents.
Circulars. For any printed circular, hand-bill or cuScrtuempnt,
unsealed, sent any distance, 2 cents.
Ncicsprzpcs. Of 1900 square inches er les. sent not more than
one hundred miles, or any distance within the same State, 1 cent ;
sent oversuch distance 1 1-2 cents.
Pamphlets. For every pamphlet, as other matter of ' every kind."
that is transportable by mail nnd has no written communication, of
one ounce or less, or for a newspaper exceeding 1900 square iuches of
surface, 2 1-2 cents
For each additional outline, or any excess gicater linn a half

The Franking Privilege, as regulated by ike act of Morc .1,
1845, front and after July 1. 1845.
1. The President, ex-Presidents and Mrs. Madison snd Mrs. Har-
rison, retain the franking privilege, as regulated by former law; .
: '.' ice-President, Members of Congress, and Delegates from
territories, may transmit public documents free during their ofticril
terms; may send and receive free, letters, newspapers, or packets,
weighing under two ounces, during the session of Congress, and for
thirty days before the commencement and thirty davs after the clnsa
of any session; May receive letters free, not weighing over twu
ounces, during the rcces; this rioes not includcthc interval from onn
Congress to the commencement of the next ;) mav transmit free from
themselves the whole year: that is. from sixty d"av before the com-
mencement of any session, until the meeting of the" next Con-ress.

5. Tho thrco Assistant Postmasters General may send free, letter,
packages, or other matter-! relating exclusively to their official duties,
or the business of the postotlice department ; may receive all such loi-
ters and documents as iclate to their own duties or that of the depart-
ment, and have the postages remitted at the city postolfice.
6. Deputy Postmasters may send free all such letters and packa-
ges, as may relate exclusively to the business of their respective of-
fices, and may have allowed all postages paid or charged to thorn at
the settlement of their accounts.
7. Exchange papers between Editors, pass free.
3. Editors or publishers of newspapers may send thoir paperi free
within thirty miles of the place of publication.
9. Communications addressed to the officer of tho Government,
heretofore having the franking privilege, touching the business of
their respective offices are to bo paid out of tho contingent fund pro-
videri for their offices, or our of ibe treasury.
Postal Arrangement with Great Britain.
Sea-postage 16 cents, paid to the vessel performing the service.
English inland postage, on letters to or from the United States,
lAd-. or 3 cents.
"inland postage of the United States, on letters to or from England,
5 cents.
So that a letter from any part of England to any part of the United
Stutes. or rice versa, will cost 24 cents prc-payment or not, at tha
option of tho sender; but if pre-payment is made, it must be for tho
whole.
Newspapers will be sent in the steamers of either country, at a
charge not exceeding 2 cents( to be pre-paid.
Pamphlets, periodicals, &c..will be charged for each, not exceeding
2 ounces, one penny or 2 cents; over 2, and not exceeding 3, ounces,
Gd., or 12 cents; over 3, nnd not exceeding 4, ounces, 3d., or 16 cents;
for all excoeriing 4 ounces, 2d., or 4 cents for each additional ounce
or fraction.
Closed mails may be sent throush the United States to tho North
American provinces, accompanied by an agent, at 10 cents tho ounce;
and 25 per cent, additional for counting by the ounce, intend of tho
singls letter.
Closed mails of the United States maybe sent through the Canadas,
or the United Kingdom, upon paying, by the ounce, two rales of the
inland postage, and 25 percent., as above.
