A $197,000 budget, name change
and a four-year degree program
in nursing were approved by the
Lamar Board of Regents Tues-
day.
The $197,000-plus budget will
be used to operate the new Set-
zer Student Center for the re-
mainder of the 1970-71 academic
year which will end Aug. 31,1971.
The bulk of the money will come
from student activity fees with
the remainder expected to come
from the center’s operations.
The regents also approved a
recommendation by Dr. Frank
Thomas to apply to the state
legislature to change the name
of Lamar to Lamar State Uni-
versity of Technology.
Dr. Thomas said there were
several advantages to being a
university including easier
access to financial support from
endowments.
Also approved was a four-year
degree program in nursing. The
program was worked out in co-
operation with Beaumont’s Bap-
tist Hospital and has the supoort
of other area hospitals.
Dr. Thomas told the regents
that the college had been offered
$65,000 to help initiate the pro-
gram.
Work toward this degree will
yield a BS degree.
The nursing degree program
will be under the biology depart-
ment and will eventually have in-
dependent status in the school
scienced.
The proposed program will be
presented to the Coordinating
Boa'd of the Texas Colleges and
Universities ? stem for its ap-
proval. Dr. Thomas cautioned
that it might “not be easy” to get
the board’s approval.
Rej. Smith
To introduce
Name Change
State Rep. Will. L. Smith an-
nounced he will introduce legis-
lation in January to have the name
of Lamar College changed to La-
mar State University of Tech-
nology.
The announcement follows an
approval of the request for the
name change by the Lamar Board
of Regents Tuesday.
Smith said he has asked the
legislative council to prepare a
bill for that purpose and said he
will ask all area legislators to
join him as co-sponsors of the
measure.
WHAT’S LEFT
What's Left? will not be dis-
tributed on campus this week
due to printing difficulties, ac-
cording to Duane Force. The
paper will return to campus
Thursday afternoon and be back
on its bi-weekly schedule, Force
said.
