Five Finalists Vie for
By Phyllis Lewis
Five Lamar coeds vie for the
homecoming queen today in the
runoff elections.
Selected as finalists in a pri-
mary election held Tuesday were
Patricia Adams, Dana Daniels,
Beth Lomonte, Eileen Oldag, and
Sandra Oliver.
The Queen will be crowned at
the Lamar-University of South-
western Louisiana football game
Saturday.
Miss Adams is a secondary
education major from Beaumont.
She is sponsored by Gamma Phi
Pr. George Wall, associate1
professor of philosophy, resigned
as chairman of the Honors Pro-
gram Oct 17.
Dr. Wall said, “Faculty mor-
ale is so low that I just could
not continue to develop the kinds
of programs needed.*
Dr. Wall served as Honors
Program chairman since last
May and had been on the Honors
committee for three years.
The Honors Program offers
one course per semester to sel-
ected students from various de-
partments. The program’s pur-
pose, according to Dr. Wall, is
to “encourage the pursuit
of higher learning and tax the ab-
ilities of the students beyond
regular course instruction.*
“Lack of adequate faculty sal-
ary increases from the admin-
istration is the prime cause of
low faculty morale and the basic
reason for my resignation,* Dr.
Wall stated. He further said,
“Quality education just seems to
be an anamoly at Lamar and as
a result, trying to develop a
quality Honors Program is
imprudent. The administration is
apparently unconcerned or they
would try to keep a first rate
faculty.*
He said that whether he re-
signed or not, the program was
in trouble because many of the
teachers contacted did not want
to develop any programs, due

any real progress at Lamar.
Dr. Wall additionally said that
in good schools the order of con-
cern was an enlightened policy
toward education, a first rate
faculty, a good library and ade-
quate buildings.
“At Lamar that order seems
to be completely reversed,* he
concluded.
President Nixes
Ticket Loaning
If Lamar students wish the pri-
vilege of loaning their meal tick-
ets to other students, the price
of meal tickets will go up, ac-
cording to President Frank A.
Thomas, Jr.
High operational costs have al-
ready brought about a reduc-
tion in cafeteria personnel, and
the administration hopes to avoid
any lessening of service. In fact,
this year has seen the addition
of breakfast facilities for late
risers, with orange juiee, milk,
coffee, and pastries available
from 8 :30 to 9 a.m. to meal
ticket holders.
“If operational costs continue
to rise, the administration is
considering turning food services
over to a private concern, as
has been the case on many Tex-
as campuses," President Thomas
said. “Primarily, we are con-
cerned with keeping costs to our
students at a minimal level.*

AAUP
Resolution
Circulated
The American Association of
University Professor’s resolu-
tion alledging salary discrimina-
tion by the administration ag-
ainst certain faculty members
who did not support Dr. Frank
Thomas for president of Lamar,
is currently in circulation among
AAUP faculty members for a
vote.
Dr. David Zink, associate pro-
fessor of English and chairman
of the Lamar chapter of AAUP
said that commenting on the vote
on the resolution would be pre-
mature. He said that he did not
release the information to the
local press at the time the re-
solution was presented to the
chapter last week. He further
said that he had no knowledge
of how the information was leak-
ed.
Dr. Zink said that the com-
mittee on academic freedom was
given a temporary assignment of
investigating academic freedom
at Lamar. The committee, made
up of Dr. Henry B. Rule and
Dr. Robert Olsen, professors of
English; Dr. Richard Cherry,
professor of business and Dr.
Joseph Pizzo, associate profes-
sor of physics, drew up the re-
solution.
According to Dr. Zink, “The
members of the committee ex-
hibited the highest degree of de-
dication to the institution, topro-
