Bids for the dance are
$2.50 per couple. They may
be purchased from any
member or pledge of Kappa
Delta. A bootn has been
set up in the lobby of the
SUBforthe purpose of sel-
ling bids.
Committees for the dance
include Edith Wells, deco-
rations, Barbara Watson,
publicity, Ann Creswell,
SUB Booth, Sherry Simpson,
tickets . Joanne Webb is
chapter president.
A winning Lamar debate
team overcame Hardin -
S i m m ons University by a
154-150 margin to win the
"Young America Speaks"
tournament Sunday in Dal-
las.
The final match put La-
mar on the negative side
of the issue: Should the
further development of
nuclear weapons be pro-
hibited b y inte rnaticnal
agreement?
Arnold C. Anderson,
Tech’s debate coach, had
the top combination with
Sue Hill of Sinton, and
Robert Jerald King, of
Orange . They defeated
David Thomas of Valley
Mills and David Deaton of
Abilene coached by Dr. De -
Witte T. Holland.
Kathryn Williams of Ana-
huacand Frank Lee Myers
of Be aumont took part in
the "battle royal" round of
the debate for Lamar.
H a r din-Simmons partici-
pants in this portion were
William L. Medley Jr. and
Helen Joyce Woods both of
Abilene.
A field of 14 teams started
in the Texas intercollegiate
debate toumament with
subjects, sides, opponents
and debating dates selected
by lot.
Lamar had previously de-
feated Texas A &M. College,
Texas Christian University,
and Baylor University.
Hardin-Simmons had won
over Rice University and
Texas Technological Col-
lege.
The victory added an ad-
ditional $1,000 to Lamar's
scholarship fund from the
Sinclair Refining Company,
sponsors . This made a
t o t al of $4,000 won by the
debate team in the contest.
Evans Named
REW Speaker
Dr. Louis Hadley Evans,
acknowledged as one of the
twelve outstanding relig-
ious leaders of America,
will be the keynote speaker
this year for Religious
Emphasis Week, April 25,
26 and 27.
Dr. Claude Boren, chair-
man of the REW committee,
announced the name of the
s p e aker as well as mem-
bers of the REW commit-
tees.
Dr. Evans holds a number
of honorary degrees and
has also been selected as
the "Speaker of the Year
in the Field of Religion."
Mr.RoyBiser is program
committee chairman. Fac-
ulty members of this com-
mittee are Dr. Roger
Yerickand Dr. J.D. Landes,
Student members are David
Beck and Ronald Hicks.
Honor Group
Takes Freshmen
Sixty-five Lamar Tech
students have been initiated
•into the Freshman Honor
Society in the annual Spring
ceremony at which Tommy
Hayes of Beaumont was
elected president.
Other officers elected
were Bill Matthews IV,
vice-president; Carolyn
Ott of Houston, secretary-
treasurer; and Alice Wor-
den of Beaumont, reporter.
