REVIEW
By Mike Ramsey
f
The coUege and pro seasons are already a week old and the
initial week was just a small sample of what is ahead in what
promises to be one of the most exciting years ever.
Every corner in the nation is blessed with some gift to the
gridiron sport from Southern California on the West Coast to
Eastern powerhouses Syracuse and Penn State.
Here in the Southwest is what may be the most balanced and
exciting race in the nation, the Southwest Conference.
Texas and Texas A&M head the slate but waiting in the wings
are Texas Tech, TCU and Arkansas, all ready to bolster the
conference’s in ter sectional record which dipped to its all time
lowest last year.
Most experts are putting the favorite’s tag on an angry band
of Longhorns at Austin and with good reason.
The Horns are blessed with a bundle of talent headed by Chris
Gilbert who wiU try to become the fourth player in the South-
west Conference’s history to gain 3,000 yards.
Also back is Bill Bradley, with a sound knee and some press
clippings to honor.
Super Bill will also find somebody besides Gilbert to carry the
load, mainly in the form of sophomore Steve Worster.
So confident in Worster’s ability is Darrell Royal that he
changed the team’s offense to the wing T which haunted oppo-
nents in the days of Jim Saxton.
A&M appears ready to argue experts’ views, however, and
only a question of depth keeps the Aggies from being favored.
Back at the throttle is Edd Hargett and he wiU find familiar
faces behind him in Larry Stegent and Wendell Housely.
The line is set with big Rolf Druger anchoring and AU-Ameri-
can Bill Hobbs at linebacker.
TCU sports a top backfield with bulls Ross Montgomery and
Norman Bulaich returning, but question marks at quarterback
and in the line may hamper Frog chances.
Arkansas will be ready to claim attention foHowing last year’s
disappointing 4-5-1 mark. Backs David Dickey and Russell Cody
head Pig chances.
Since last year was the year of the bumper sticker and not
the year of the Horns, the columnist does believe ’68 is the
year.
But nothing will be decided until Thanksgiving Day when every-
thing just might break loose, mainly the MadHorns after three
years of being corralled.
