Will Feature Houston Counselor
$4,000 Study Grant

will be the theme of a confer-
ence for school administrators
and counselors to be held on
campus Tuesday, Nov. 28.
Sponsored by the Texas Edu-
cation Agency, Lamar and the
Lamar Area School Study Coun-
cil, the conference will have
Dr. Fred Proff, director cf coun-
selor education at the University
of Houston, as its main speaker.
Dr. Proff will address the
conference at 9 a. m. and 1 p. m.
in the Lamar Theatre. His topics
will be “A Balanced Guidance
Program” and “What the Future
Holds.”
Section meetings will be con-
ducted on “Tef ling: Facts and
Fallacies;* “The '-'-.man Farv
in Conns, ling:” Building a
Better F.elationsh:p ’ Ytth School
Administration;” “The Need lor
Guidance in the Elementary
School;” and “Guidance for the
Exceptional Child.”
One feature of the conference
will be a college information
session directed by - ris H.
Kelton, dean of admissions at
Lamar. Speakers will include
Jerry Jordan, assistant to the
dean of admissions; Dick Oliver,
director of college information;
and David L. Bost, dean of stu-
dent life.

Michael Harrington, author of
“The Other America,” a book
influential in establishing the war
on poverty under Pres. John
F. Kennedy, will present a pro-
gram in McDonald Gym Dec.
5, at 12:30 p.m.
“The Other America" is a
reading text in Government 231.
Robert Weikel, chairman of
the forum committee, said that
the public is invited.

Dr. Proff, formerly professor
of educational psychology and
counselor of education at the
University of Illinois, holds a
BA degree in pyschology and
sociology from the University
of Minnesota, and MA and EdD
degrees in clinical psychology
and counseling from the Univer-
sity of Missouri.
He has been a consultant to the
US Office of Education, the Illi-
nois State Office of Public In-
struction, the Methodist World
Board of Missions and to the
Interprofessional Researcu Co-
mmission Pupil Personnel Ser-
vices.
He has written 22 articles
in professional journals as well
as numerous monographs, sect-
ions of encyclopedias and serves
as editor for guidance publicat-
ions by Follett Publishing Com-
pany.
A research grant of $4,000
over a two-year period has been
awarded to two history profess-
ors by the Enterprise Company
for a study of indexing the Beau-
mont Enterprise, morning news-
paper.
Dr. Paul E. Isaac, professor
of history, and Naaman J. Wood-
land jr., assistant professor of
history, will receive the grant.
The fund will be administered
through the Lamar Research
Center during 1967-68 and 1968-
69, according to Lloyd B. Cherry,
acting dean of the School of
Engineering and director of the
Research Center. Initial work
on the project was supported by
a Lamar Research Center grant.
Dr. Isaac and Woodland plan
an index to local and regional
events and local reaction to state
national and international news.
They have chosen the year of
1933 as a typical year to begin
