In LSU Track Meet
Lamar’s baseball Cardinals,
suffering through a long,
offensive lapse, dropped a three
game series to Southland Con-
ference foe Arkansas State Fri-
day and Saturday in Jonesboro,
Ark.
Late inning miseries plagued
the Birds twice Saturday as the
Redskins sweRt both end of a
double header from the Cards,
3-2, 1 -0. The Indians also won
the opening game of the three-
game series on Friday by a
5-2 count.
A single by Larry Moffett in
the seventh gave the Tribe the
first game of Saturday’s double
header and a bases loades walk
with two out won the nightcap.
By sweeping the important ser-
ies, the Indians moved into second
place in the Southland Conderence
race. The Cardinals are now
3-3 in league play as they trail
front runner Abilene Christian
by a full game.
In the opener, the Redbirds
jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first
inning. With two outs, Triny
Rivera singled and stole second.
Nicky Accardo was then safe on
a fielder’s choice moving Riv-
era to third. Rivera scored
when a throw by catcher Joe
Drace sailed into center field
and Accardo was plated on an
error by Tribe third baseman
David Runk.
The Indians tied the game in
the third on a single and error
and two more singles.
The Tribe won the game in
the seventh on a single, a sac-
rifice and Moffett’s big blow.
David Bernsen took the loss
in going the route. He walked
two and fanned four.
In the nightcap Lamar had four
runners thrown out at the plate
and had pitchers Danny Hetzel
and Mike Hughes knocked out
due to injuries. Jackie Byrd
absorbed the loss in the sev-
enth when he walked two and
gave up a single. With the
bases loaded, he walked Larry
Langley to bring home the game’s
only run.
Rusty Bourg hurled a nifty four
hitter as the Injuns downed the
Cardinals in Friday’s single
game.
Bourg, a hard-throwing right-
hander, stymied Cardinal bats
with a moving fastball and a
quick slider, while surrendering
only two unearned runs.
The Indians jumped to a first
inning lead when Larry Moffet
tripled and scored on Jim Berry’s
sacrifice fly.
Lamar came back to take the
lead in the fourth when Nicky
Accardo and Mark Oldham sin-
gled. Both runners scored when
Berry booted Leldon Ward’s
ground ball at first.
The sixth inning proved to be
the fatal one for the Redbirds
as Stan Williams and Bourg sin-
gled to start the inning and Lang-
ley then tried to sacrifice the
runners.
Cardinal hurler Richard Valley
threw to Bourg on the play but
after some deliberation by the
third base umpire Williams was
ruled safe, loading the bases.
Drace then drilled a single
to center to score the go ahead
tally.-
Bourg then retired the last 10
men in a row to secure the win.
Valley was charged with
the loss. He surrendered all
five Indian runs. Bob McCrary
finished up, hurling one hit ball
in his inning and two-thirds stint.
The Cardinals will face the
University of Texas at Arling-
ton at Arlington for a single
game today before facing the
Rebels in a double header Sat-
ruday.
Lamar Linksters
Win Team Crown
At Dixie Tourney
The Cardinal golfers, in their

captured first place in the Hol-
iday in Dixie Golf Tournament
Saturday in Shreveport.
Mike Allen and Jim Bishop

team total.
Allen and Bishop finished third
in the medalist race behind Ricky
Maxie of Stephen F. Austin with
a seven over par 223 and Dave
Smith of Mississippi Southern
with a 225.
The other three members of
the Cardinal team were close
behind Allen and Bishop. Gene
Hutchinson had a 229 and Vi-
viano Villereal and Mike Jerome
had 230’s to give the Redbirds
their best team effort of the
year.
