BUSINESS ^ cjiungJ
"Grandma" Megarity
Candidate for President
The selection of a plat
form for the running of an
office is of vital impor
tance in most campaigns
So it is, also, in this one.
However,as candidate for
the office of Student Body
President, I must tell you
that all that I advocate for
the college and the Student
Body is subject to the ap-
proval of both^ I will not
make you promises or
committments. I would not
have you make them to me.
I will and do offer my
services to you in the of-
fice of Student Body Presi-
dent and I will do my best
to uphold the tradition of
Lamar Tech and keep the
fine progress thus far
made, within my scope of
office in the discharge of
my duties.
I favor a strong, united,
e n t h u s i astically repre -
sented Student Body. This
can be accomplished only
by you. Your interests in
the college are directly re-
flected through the pro-
gress of the college. Those
you elect to office will rep-
resent these interests.
For a strong Student Body,
for a bigger and better
Lamar; for the represen-
tation and progress you
want, I offer myself and
my services to you as
Student Body President.
SECRETARIES
A beach party for all sec-
retarial science students
will be held on April 28.
All students wishing to at-
tend, please turn your
name in to Miss Jeanette
Wright this week.
NOTICE TO CANDIDATES
Students who filed for of-
fice are asked to check
with Ann Silva in Dean Kel-
ton's. office to see if their
applications have been ap-
proved before beginning
their campaigns.
Phillip Taylor
Candidate for President
I have objectively and
carefully analyzed the im-
portance of the position as
President of the Student
Association.
In weighing my qualifica-
tions against the require-
ments for this office, I am
convinced that above all I
would like to promise you
the sincerity and determi-
nation that is essential if
the duties of this office are
adequately and efficiently
discharged.
I have served as a mem-
ber of the Fraternity-
Sorority Council and the
Inter-Club Council. For
two and a half years I have
been drum major for the
college band, and am pres -
ently serving as President
of the Cavalier Fraternity.;
Should I be elected to this '
office, all of my efforts
will be directed toward the
improvement of our cam-
pus as compared to other
colleges of this area.
There are numerous
ways in which Lamar Tech
could be improved, and I
would like to briefly out-
line a few things which I
personally believe can be
accomplished:
1. The relations between
the faculty and student
body could be improved.
I believe that the faculty
should cooperate with the
students and whenever
possible,not schedule ex-
ams the day following col-
lege wide functions.
2. The Inter-Club Council
should be re-organized so
that it will function more
efficiently. Relations be-
tween the different organi-
zations on the campus
could bd improved so as to
coordinate their actions in
promoting student activi-
ties.
3. The Student Council
should begin to plan for the

Candidate for President
Next year, 1957, Lamar
will be host to 39 other
colleges and universities
from all over Texas.
Lamar will make an ex-
cellent impression—not
only because she is inclin-
ed that way,but because she
wants all of Texas to rec-
ognize her academic and
extra - curricular promi-
nence .
As for participation,
voting increased 100 per
cent this year over last
year. I believe this amount
can be doubled again if we
can coordinate the activi-
ties to a campus-wide
scale .This can be achieved
by interest in and repre-
sentation by the Student
Council.
It is a recognized fact that
each school on the campus
has problems peculiar to
that particular group. By
representation in the
Council these problems
have been and will continue
to be dissolved and thereby
consolidate the groups into
a complete Student Body.
Having served in the Stu-
dent Council during 1955-
56 and taken part in the
Texas Intercollegiate Stu-
dent Association, I am
eager to take a more active
part in the interests of my
fellow students and student
government.
I feel I can do this because
it is my sincere desire.
Belles Enter
Neches Event
The Southern Belles have
been busy again building a
float. This float is to be
entered in the amateur
division of the Neches
River Festival Parade.
It will depict a river
scene carrying out the
Diamond Jubilee theme of
the festival.

Campaigning To
Begin Monday
Campaigning for student body and class offices will
officially get under way Monday morning at 8. The
Redbird has received permission from Student Council
to publish the campaign platforms in this issue prior
to the official opening of
the campaigning.
The platforms that are
published herein are those
that were submitted by the
candidates.
All candidates for execu-
tive offices in the Student
Council were informed of
the willingness of The
Redbird to publish their
campaign platforms.
Those that were not pub-
lished include only those
that were not submitted for
publication.
The variations in length
of some of the platforms
is due only to the desire of
some candidates to write
platforms of different
lengths. The p 1 a t f o r ms
have been edited for gram-
matical errors, but other
than that there have been
no changes made.
The high point of the cam -
paigning this year will
probably prove to be the
political rally that is plan-
ned for 10 a.m.Thursday,
April 26. The rally will be
held on the patio between
the student union building
and the vocations building.
Candidates for executive
offices of the Student
Council will be invited to
make campaign addresses
to the student body at the
rally. The rally will get
under way with yells of the
student body led by the can-
didates for cheerleaders.
■Also there to add to the
spirit of the campaignin
will be the Lamar Tec
band.
As of the deadline for this
week’s issue there were
still some offices that had
not been filed for, and most
of the offices have receiv-
ed only one candidate.
Lawrence Schkade speak-
ing for Student Council ex-
pressed the regret and
disappointment felt by the
members of the Council
for the lack of political as-
pirants filing for office.
My platform is one that is
both simple and reason-
able.
First of all, and most im-
portant, is the possibility
of reorganization in the
student government, es-
pecially in Inter-Club
Council. Action in student
affairs, p a r t i-c ipation in
Student Council sponsored
events, lack of interest
shown by many of the mem-
bers of Inter-Club Council,
and the qualifications re-
garding members hip in
this Council gives me no
other choice except to be-
lieve that either reorgan-
ization or a new method for
carryint on Inter-Club
Council business must be
obtained.
I do not say that I can
solve this problem, but I
do say that I will devote my
all to improve conditions
along this line, and pos-
sibly create a better inter-
est in student affairs.
If I am your next vice
president, 1 will do my best
to make as many students
as possible conscientious
of student affairs, thereby
creating a better student
attitude and a higher de-
gree of pride at Lamar
Tech.
