THE REDBIRD
Friday, April 20, 1956
Larry Farmer
Candidate for Treasurer
Our college has taken
great strides during the
few short years that it has
been a senior college. It
has enjoyed almost unbe-
lievable growth both phy-
sically and scholastically,
and it will continue to grow
at this rapid pace for many
more years.
The collegiate world has
taken note of our progress
as was evidenced by our
accreditation by the South-
ern Association on its first
visit. Na t i onal fraternal
organizations have taken a
definite interest in Lamar,
and many have sent repre-
sentatives to our campus.
It is now time for us to take
a good look at ourselves.
Our first full year after
accreditation will be one of
great importance. The
eyes of college men and
women the country over
will be focused on us to see
if we are worthy of the
position we now occupy .We
know that we are, but we
must prove it. In order to
do this we must elect com-
petent student leaders who
will be capable of meeting
any challenge th.at may
confront us and who will be
able to make use of every
asset that we possess in
accomplishing die desired
end of maintaining and im-
proving the high position
that we enjoy at this time.
It is my firm belief that
the following principles
will enable us to attain the
honor and respect for our
college that it so justly
deserves.
1. Adefinite program
must be established to
arouse and maintain the
interest of freshmen. This
program should cover not
only the first week of the
fall semester, .but should
continue for several
weeks. The freshmen rep-
resent our future, and we
cannot take them lightly.
2. Our outmoded system
of councils which served
its purpose when Lamar
was a small college must
be reorganized if it is to
keep pace with our physi-
calgrowth.
3 .The student body should
be better informed of the
action and policies of its
student government. At
regular intervals a report
should be printed in The
Redbird containing this in-
formation.
4.The student body should
be informed of the duties
that each officer must per-
form so that it may cast
