....CHARLES STARCKE
Depth Problems Faced Redbirds
Almost equal portions of
bright spots and problems
faced the Lamar Tech Card-
inal candidates when they
reported for practice.
On the bright side of the
ledger, the Cardinals had
plenty of experience at tack-
les, center and halfbacks.
Three good ends were ready
for action and Charles
Starcke was back seeking his
fourth letter as a Card
quarterback. Two senior
fullback, Shepard Touchett
Tipton Becomes
Bird End Coach
Lester B. (Bill) Tipton,
former head football and
b a s k e t b all coach at South
ParkHigh School here, join-
ed Lamar Tech's football
coaching staff officially this
fall.
Tipton was named end
coach andassistant profess-
or of physical education at
Lamar Tech last spring and
joined the Redbird coaches
for spring practice. The
coach of South Park's state
AAA basketball champions
in 1953,Tiption fills a newly
created position in Lamar's
expanding athletic and
physical education program.
A former All-Southwest
Conference end at SMU,
Coach Tiptonwas head
basketball coach at South
Park for 10 years and head boy like J
football coach for five years
He left the South Park system
at the end of the 1959-58
season. Lastyear he taught
at Port Neches-Groves High
School.
Tipton won three 1 e tte rs
in football, basketball and
baseball at SMU after win
ning eight letters in football,
basketball and track at
Grove ton High School.
He began coaching at El
Paso High School, served two
years at Ranger High School
and came to South Park High
in 1948 as head basketball
coach.
and Gerald Foityn, were also
ready for action.
The problems facing Red-
bird Head Coach J. B. Hig-
gins and his assistants, Line
Coach Dan Rogas, Backfield
Coach Ty Terrell and End
Coach Bill Tipton, included
the uncovering of specialists
and the addition of depth at
several spots.
Gone are Dudley Rench, co-
c apt a in and halfback, who
handled most of the point
after touchdown kicking and
two-time All-LSC End Glenn
Green, chief of the Bird punt-
ers . End Larry Ward looked
like the best bet to take over
Green’s role, but the place-
ment race promised to be a
wide open chase.
Although some promising
halfbacks returned, it is al-
ways hard to fill the shoes
of a departed all-conference
E. Whitmore.
Whitmore led the Cards in
rushing last season.
Hie four top halfback can-
didates are Charles
Dinhoble, Ronnie Fontenot,
Ed Peveto and Bill McNeill.
Dinhoble, Peveto and
McNeill are returning let-
terman, while Fontenot was
red-shirted at Texas A&M
last year. Fontenot was
All-State Catholic high
schooler at St. Anthony's.
Some help for S t a r c ke at
quarterback also was listed
near the top for the Cards.
Best bets in that department
were Jerry Rogers and Pat minal problems
Day. Rogers suffered a bro -
ken collarbone against Sam
Houston last season and Day,
then a freshman, came to fill
the gap.
Two promising newcomers
at quarterback are Lavaughn
Davis a transfer from SMU,
and freshman Win dell
Hebert from Thomas Jeffer-
son High in Port Arthur.
The Cards cannot afford to
get a fullback hurt. Fresh-
man candidates are all that
is left to back up the exper-
ienced hands. Touchett has
three letters and Foityn two.
In the line, Lamar probably
has the best brace of tackles
in the Lone Star Conference
in Jim Woodard and Henry
Sledge.
Gary McKee is back to man
the pivot post and one of his
former teammates, Mal-
colm McKay, is available
right behind McKee.
The guards are sound of-
fensively, but show need for
work on defense. Two-let-
terman Norman Noble will
not be back with the Cards
this fall. He was 'forced to
drop out of school for finan-
cial reasons.
However, two-letterman
Bobby Koon, one-letterman
Nader Bood, two-letterman
Ray Campbell and two-let-
terman John Donaho are back
at guards.
A fourth end to round out
the much-needed two teams
of ends would solve the ter-
Ward, Don Maxwell and
Armour McManus appear to
be set at the end posts.
Ward and Maxwell have two
letters apiece, while
McManus, a Baytown pro-
duct, played freshman ball
at the University of Texas
last fall.
As for the overall Lone Star
Conference look, the Cardi-
nals are ranked with Sam
Houston and Texas A &I. The
Cards, Bearkats and Jave-
linas have been picked as the
teams having the best chance
to knock over the talent-
loaded East Texas Lions.
The Lions are defending LSC
champs.
