Pro baseball part
of plan to fix budget
By Brad McBride
UP sports assistant
The Lamar finance and audit
committee, in response to a projected
revenue shortfall of $126,049,
announced that it has been negotiat-
ing with a class A minor league base-
ball team to move the team to
Beaumont in an effort to raise addi-
tional revenue.
The proposal would have the
minor league team playing in
Vincent-Beck Stadium and would
raise an estimated $20,000 this fiscal
year for Lamar’s athletic program.
The committee also has planned a
sports banquet for mid- to late April.
The banquet, which will involve the
Cardinal Club, is expected to raise an
additional $20,000.
Interim athletic director Bruce
Stracener declined to release the
name of the team, organization or
current location of the team until a
contract is signed.

You have ALS — "Lou Gehrig's
disease."
Gradually, you'll become unable
to walk or use your hands. You'll find
yourself drooling. Your reflexes will
disappear.
Your mind, however, will remain
completely clear, leaving you a
frustrated prisoner in a body you
can't control.
ALS is a fatal neuromuscular
disorder that attacks adults in the
prime of life. Right now, no cure is
known. But the Muscular Dystrophy
Association has launched an all-out
assault against this dread disease.
MDA has developed the world's
largest integrated ALS research and
patient services program. The Asso-
ciation has established five major ALS
research centers and maintains some
230 clinics to help people with ALS
and other neuromuscular disorders.
And MDA is the only voluntary
health agency that provides patients
with a wide range of medical care
and equipment free of charge.
You can help MDA fight ALS and
dozens of other neuromuscular disor-
ders by making a tax-deductible dona-
tion to the Association. You can even
specify that your check is to be used
exclusively to bene
fit ALS patients.
There are
20,000 ALS pa-
tients in America
who can't write
checks or even
read this ad out
loud. Please send
your contribution
to MDA today.

Basketball —
In NCAA Division I history only three father-son coaching
combinations have gone head-to-head.
Ed Diddle of Western Kentucky faced his son when Ed Diddle
Jr. was at the helm of Middle Tennessee State University. Xhe
legendary Ray Meyer of DePaul coached against his son Tom,
who held the reigns at University of Illinois, Chicago.
The most recent matchup was between the van Breda Kolffs.
Butch (dad) of Hofstra and Jan of Cornell squared off Jan. 12.
The son prevailed in this contest, only his second victory in 14
games against his father, 70-56. Butch literally gave his son a
kick in the pants, just as he warned he would do if his son beat
him.
