Cards scalp Indians, move up in rankings
By LYRA KATENA
UP sports editor
The coaches and the fans were
proud of the Lamar Cardinal
basketball team after the 62-86 vic-
tory over Northeast Louisiana
University Saturday in the Mon-
tagne Center.
“It was a good win for us,’’ head
coach Tom Abatemarco said. “The
kids did an awfully good job of com-
ing back and hanging tough. We got
over the hump this game. With
Louisiana Tech (Thursday), we
didn’t get over the hump and we
struggled to score.”
The Cards went into the game
against NLU trying to recover from
the loss to Tech.
The Cards did not click in the first
half, trailing the Indians for most of
the period. The ’Birds were behind
25-22 at the half.
The Cards still did not have the
momentum at the beginning of the
- second half. With 13 minutes on the
clock, they were down seven points.
Gradually they closed the gap, and
with 4:24 left, the Cards took the
lead for keeps.
“I thought it helped us defensive-
ly in the second half, when we went
to the triangle-and-two,”
Abatemarco said. “We were able to
have contact with Michael
Saulsberry and also stop Kelvin
Collins. We just kept on changing
our defense until we found one that
worked.”
Another burst of energy for the
Cards came when an announce-
ment was made about McNeese
State University’s lead over Loui-
siana Tech in the latter half of the
second period. The announcement
fired up the crowd and the kids,
Abatemarco said.
Lamar’s leading scorer was
James Gulley, Newton junior, with
14 points. DeWayne Brown, Dallas
senior, followed with 12, con-
tributing three of seven in three-
pointers.
Defensively, Gulley led with
seven rebounds, followed by David
Jones, San Diego freshman, with
six.
Saulsberry led the Indians offen-
sively and defensively with 18
points and eight rebounds. Morris
Spencer also had eight rebounds
and 14 points. Collins put his share
in the pot with 14 points.
The Cards are 11-9 on the season
and 3-2 in the Southland Con-
ference, tying them for second with
Arkansas State University in the
SLC race.
Lamar will go on the road this
week to battle against the SLC
leader, Louisiana Tech, Thursday
night. “We have a shot in Ruston,”
Abatemarco said. “We played well
against Tech last Thursday; we
just didn’t hit the big shots to win it.
