League to hold exhibition
Showcase provided for works of art
By PAULA LAGUSH
of the UP staff
The Beaumont Art League is
scheduled to hold a membership drive
exhibition beginning Sunday at 2
p.m., Christina Thome, membership
chairman, said.
The exhibition will be held in the
Beaumont Art League building at 2675
Gulf Street opening Sunday from 2
p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 9
p.m. daily throughout the duration of
the South Texas State Fair, Thome
said.
Also, a local band, Straightway,
will provide entertainment and
refreshments will be served, she said.
“All the members of the art league
have a membership drive each year,
and each member is allowed to enter
up to three pieces of art done in the
last two years, Thome said.
“Everything gets in that the
members want to enter. This is not a
juried show.”
The exhibition will be judged in two
catergories, professional and non-
professional, Thome said.
The “Best in Show” prize will be
given a one-man art show next year,
along with cash prizes and awards for
honorable mention, she said.
“This is the oldest art league ex-
hibition in town,” A1 Gayton, artist
and gallery chairman said.
Approximately 300 pieces of art will
be on display, Cherry said. Among
these will be sculptures, drawings,
paintings and other forms of art
media. Some of the art work will be on
sale by the individual artists, she
said.
This exhibition will be judged by
Jerry Newman, Lamar associate pro-
fessor of art, Thome said.
Newman was appointed “Texas Ar-
tist of the Year” and was given a one-
man show in the Rotunda in Austin,
Myma Cherry, president of the Beau-
mont Art League, said. He is known
locally from his paintings promoted
by Ducks Unlimited, a local sport-
sman’s group, she said.
The Beaumont Art League was the
pioneer art league for all the other
leagues in the area, Gayton said. The
league, in existence since 1943, boasts
about 300 members, Cherry said.
It is a non-profit corporation of area
artists and patrons, she said.
“Our main objective is to promote
interest in fine arts, to encourage the
creation of art and to provide a
showcase for works of art,” Cherry
said.

many works of art to be on display at the Beaumont
Art League Exhibition beginning Sunday, Oct. 11.

What was your personal reaction to the
assassination of Anwar Sadat?
“I think it was a tragedy that he was
assassinated in such a manner. It is disgusting,
and almost scary.”
Lynne Freeland
Beaumont senior
SGA president
“A real world tragedy. We lost one of the leaders
of the peace movement.”
Jacque Placette
Director of student organizations
“I’m scared about it. Sadat was the one keeping
peace in the Middle East. Now that he’s gone,
there might be a war.”
Michelle Tyson
Sugarland freshman
Retail merchandising
“I think it is more serious than what the officials
of Egypt are making it out to be because Sadat
was the focal point of the government.”
James McEwen
Livingston graduate student
Public administration
“It is a big blow to the world, especially to the
Middle East. It is going to affect the United
States, I think, mostly in the field of energy.”
Acy Duhon
Bridge City senior
Chemical engineering
“It’s a tragedy for the United States. Sadat was
probably our one good ally in the Mid East.”
Ann Jones
Assistant professor
Business administration
“I just hope his assassination doesn’t cause
things in the Middle East to act up. I feel that he
was a great man, and everything that he did
could all be destroyed by this.”
Rodney Keller
Beaumont freshman
Government
“The world has lost a valuable leader with the
assassination of Anwar Sadat,... a revolu-
tionary who fought for and achieved his own
brand of peace .. .that was accomplished by
transcending personal, religious and ethnic pre-
judices.”
Steve Guest
SSC Governing Board chairperson
“Anwar Sadat was a really peace-loving ruler.
The problem now is there is not a peace-loving
ruler in the Middle East. Therefore, Israel may
get squashed out as a nation and all the peace
may just crumble.”
Anne Mitchell
Beaumont sophomore
Applied music
“I love it. I wish they would assassinate all of the
Arabic puppets. They accuse Sadat of being a
peace man, but he is only helpful for his regime.
His trip to Israel caused four thousand Palesti-
nian deaths.”
Elhaj Toufic
Tripoli, Lebanon, senior
Mechanical engineering
“I guess it’s pretty bad. Our country will be af-
fected, but I don’t know which way.”
Leo Trahan
Port Arthur sophomore
Industrial electronics
“He was one of my favorite statesmen, so I’m
sad.”
Andy Karamoy
Gakarta, Indonesia, sophomore
Economics
“It is a very tragic thing. After all the work they
put into the peace talks, I am curious to see if
they can continue where Sadat left off.”
Gordon Schell
Bridge City sophomore
SSCC president
“Pitiful.”
Terry Rich
Beaumont freshman
Welding
“Surprised, disappointed and very concerned. In
my opinion, President Sadat was a peace maker
who was holding together a very crucial situa-
tion and the loss of this man could very well
cause a tremendous disruption in the Arab na-
tions. ... No matter what you think of him
politically, he was able to keep peace in the Arab
nations.”
Oscar Baxley
Vice president for finance
“His death will probably be destabilizing in that
area ... I’m not convinced that his successors
will pursue peace with the same commitment as
Sadat. Its future (the peace process with Israel)
is not hopeful.
