Perch suffers kitchen damage in fire
About $100 damage was done to the kit-
chen of the Setzer Student Center Perch in
a fire Friday about midnight, Rick Clark,
Saga cash operations manager, said Mon-
day.
The fire broke out during a performance
by Dr. Rockit and the Sisters of Mercy con-
cert at the weekly Friday night Cof-
feehouse.
The fire was mostly limited to a charcoal
broiler grill used for making hamburgers,
Clark said.
The grill was in its automatic cleaning
cycle when the fire began.
“We’re lucky.it was not worse,” he said,
“because the Perch was filled with people
attending the concert. The grease built up
at the bottom of the drip pan in the grill
and it got hotter than the element. This
caused the fire to start.”
Clark said that the fire lasted no more
than three minutes. “In fact, Scott Wilker-
son, a student cook, and 1 put tne fire out
with extinguishers,” he said.
The Beaumont Fire Department
answered the call but the fire was out by
the time they arrived on the scene.
“The band was in its encore number
when the fire broke out,” Annie Stegeman,
assistant SSC programs director, said.
“The Lamar policeman on duty at the time
asked people to leave the Perch and this
closed the show.”
The Perch has been cleaned and is open
for regular serving hours.
Groups to host celebration
The Residence Hall Association, Saga Food Ser-
vice and the Setzer Student Center Council will
sponsor a Sadie Hawkins Day Celebration Friday,
Robin Caillouet, RHA president, said.
The celebration will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a
country dinner, including country fried steak, in the
SSC Cardinal Nest. The dinner is free to students
with Validine cards, and to those without cards, the
cost of dinner is $3.41.
Because dinner is being served in the Cardinal
Nest, the Main Dining Hall will be closed during this
time, Caillouet said.
Following dinner, Happy Hour will begin at 6 p.m.
in the SSC Redbird Perch. A showing of the film,
“Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” starring Marilyn
Monroe, will highlight Happy Hour.
After the movie, students will move to the SSC
Ballroom for the Sadie Hawkins Hoedown, with con-
temporary music provided by The Texas Style
Band.
During the hoedown, a $50 prize will be given to
the couple winning the Nuts and Bolts Contest. The
contest, devised by the SSCC recreation committee,
is especially geared to introducing students to each
other, Caillouet said.
The movie and hoedown are free for Lamar
students with ID, and it is not necessary to bring a
date, Caillouet said.
“It will be a fun-filled evening for all students to
enjoy,” she said.
