Idiot box no longer
Interactive-video turns TV into learning tool
Cardinal
’'-''Stephanie Mullins
'*- UP managing editor
The Center for Adult Studies at Lamar
1-''University-Beaumont, Southwestern Bell
■- Telephone Co. and the Buna Independent School
' District will offer students a little something differ-
v ' ent this fall.
The interactive-video classroom is a new system
’* at Lamar that will allow the university to hook up
'"with Buna High School by way of television screens
*• and fiber optics to offer high school seniors the
* " opportunity to earn college credit.
Two-way audio and video signals will be carried
' from the Lamar campus to the high school by means
' • of fiber optic telephone line. The instructor will be
• 'seen and heard in Buna and the students will be
~ • seen and heard by the instructor at Lamar.
“Businesses originally used the system for
~1 teleconferencing. Education systems moved into
~ ■ this and realized it was a good means for distance
education for students who can’t travel to campus,”
Janice Trammel, director of the Center for Adult
Studies, said. “Southwestern Bell provided us with
the fiber optics. Most systems use copper wire. The
difference is that the response time (using fiber
optics) is immediate.”
• Trammel said Southwestern Bell( approached
Lamar earlier this year about donating the system.
They chose Buna High School because the school
already had fiber optic cable. Southwestern Bell is
funding the project on an 18-month trial basis.
Elizabeth Viall, associate professor in the com-
munication department, will teach public speaking
using the interactive-video system. The classroom is
in 106 Carl Parker Building.
“I will use a control panel to direct the camera to
different locations. I also have a wand that I carry in
my hand that will allow the camera to follow me.
That way I don’t have to keep directing the camera
manually,” Viall said. “We will also have a fax
machine set up for handouts and for the students’
outlines for their speeches.”
Viall said the classroom in Buna will have a
trained staff and the exact same equipment as the
classroom at Lamar.
“I will have 25 Lamar students physically in the
classroom with me and the kids in Buna will be on
camera,” shesaid.
Other courses offered in the fall will include two
sections of English composition I, American gov-
ernment I and modern math in elementary school.
High school students may take only the English
composition classes.
“The advantage to high school seniors is they get
credit for high school English as well as college cred-
it,” Trammel said.
Persons interested in personal or career develop-
ment may also take the classes.
Regular and late registration for the classes has
passed and Elmer Rode, registrar and dean of
records, makes the decision to add late students. For
more information, call 880-8968.
