UP Briefs
Cardinal Fallfest
The second annual Cardinal Fallfest will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30,
at Gladys City from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Festivities include games, food, a
spook house, a chili cook-off and a volleyball tournament. Admission is
free.
The event is sponsored by the Panhellenic Association, Student
Government Association, Residence Hall Association, Setzer Student
Center Council, Recreational Sports and Lamar University
Organizations.

Single’s support group
Beginning Sept. 12, at 11 a.m., Calvary Baptist Church, 3650 Dowlen
Road, will start a new Single Parent Department. The church offers
Bible study and support to singles of all ages, and a Beginning Again
class focusing on the needs of men and women who have recently
divorced or lost a spouse through death.

Special pianists honored
A piano honors recital is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. in the
Rothwell Recital Hall. The program will feature high school junior and

Antique car day in Gladys City
Members of the Golden Triangle Antique Car Club will display their
vintage autos Saturday, Sept. 11, from 1 to 5 p.m. Activies include crafts,

Self-defense seminar
Phi Beta Sigma will sponsor a free self-defense seminar in the Setzer

Kirkland Jones
English professor dies July 25
Funeral services were held
Saturday, July 31, for Kirkland
Jones, 54, of Beaumont who died
July 25 in Beaumont Medical
Surgical Hospital.
Jones was professor of English
and had joined the faculty of
Lamar University as associate
professor and director of fresh-
man English in 1973. In 1985, he
was promoted to a full professor-
ship at Lamar, where he remained
until his death.
Twenty-eight of Jones’ 32
years of teaching were in institu-
tions of higher learning. Aside
from Lamar, his teaching career
included instructor of English
and speech at Texas Southern
University, as well as associate
professor and head of the English
and speech department at
Johnson C. Smith University in
Charlotte, N.C.
Jones attended the public
schools in Beaumont and was a
1956 honor graduate of Charlton-
Pollard High School.
In 1959, he earned a bache-
lor’s degree in English and
Spanish from the University of
Washington. He earned a mas-
ter’s degree in English and
Spanish from Texas Southern
University in Houston in 1966. In
1970, he was awarded a doctoral
degree in English by the
University of Wisconsin with
specializations in medieval litera-
ture, rhetoric and Elizabethan
drama. In 1988, he earned a
Master of Divinity degree at
Austin Presbyterian Theological
Seminary.
His career in research and
publishing began in 1968 when
he published an essay in The
Wisconsin English Journal. In
1969, with his co-editor, Alison
Dawson, he published a three-
volume guide to teaching
English (K-12) under the aus-
pices of the Department of
Public Instruction of the State of
Wisconsin.
Since that time, he had pub-
lished some three dozen essays
and reviews in scholarly journals
and encyclopedias. In October
1992, Greenwood Press pub-
lished his book, “Renaissance
Man from Louisiana: A |
Biography of Arna Wendell **
Bontemps.”
On June 5, 1993, Jones was
given the Life Membership
Award by the Zora Neale
Hurston Society at its ninth
annual convention in Baltimore.
Jones was an ordained minis-
ter in the Presbyterian Church.
He was appointed pastor of First
Kirkland Jones
Drake Memorial Presbyterian in
Orange, Westminister
Presbyterian Church in Vidor Presbyterian in Beaumont and
one year ago. Before becoming St. Andrew’s Presbyterian
pastor of that church, he had
preached at Pioneer Presbyterian
Church in Beaumont, First
Presbyterian Church in Change,
Church in Beaumont
Survivors include his mother,
Margaret Lee Jones of
Beaumont; brothers, Emmett M.
Jones and Charles A. Jones Jr.,
both of Beaumont; and sisters,
Rosemary M. Jones Green and
Melanie Jones Connor, both of
Beaumont
Burial was in Anthony
Cemetery under the direction of
Community Funeral Home,

meeting on audit
Monday
The Texas House of
Representatives Committee on
Appropriations will conduct an
open hearing Monday from 1 p.m.
to 4 p.m. in the John Gray Institute
Auditorium.
Interim Chancellor Dolph
Norton will begin the hearing with
an update followed by a report
from the State Auditor’s Office.
The hearing is a follow-up to
the meeting held in Austin on the
issues of “inadequate cash manage-
ment,” “expenditures (that) do not
appear prudent,” and “ineffective
monitoring of management and
financial activities ” that surfaced
in a report from the state auditor’s
office.
Attending the meeting will be
Rep. Robert Junell, chairman of the
appropriations committee, Rep.
Todd Hunter, chairman of the
appropriations subcommittee on
education and other members of
the subcommittee, as well as Sen.
Carl Parker, Rep. Ron Lewis and
Rep. Mark Stiles.
The State Auditor’s Office will
begin a follow-up audit Aug. 31.
