Art students’ work
in New York show
Dolf Dickson, Junior art major from Beaumont, has
been notified by the Society of Illustrators in New York
that his shadow-box construction will be displayed as
part of the Society's Annual Scholarship Competition.
The construction is done in felt-tipped pen and water-
color. In a letter from Shannon Stirrweis, Society
president, Dickson was commended for 'the excellent
quality' of his work.
Conn Trussell, art instructor, said, 'I feel it is
really an honor to have our students participate and win
in this kind of competition.”
Last year Louis Oliver, Port Arthur art major, had
work shown at the competition.
'This, of course, helps the art department achieve
notoriety,” Trussell said. “We’ve been asked for fur-
ther information about our department by the Society
which is considering adding us to its list of recommend-
ed institutions.”
The New York exhibition will open May 15 and
continue for three weeks with an awards presentation
for winners set for May 18.
Home ec president named
Martha Hanks was installed as president of the La-
mar Home Economics Association for the 1973-74
academic year.
Other officers are’ Jennifer Langston, first vice-
president; Mrs. Billie Jo Henry, second vice presi-
dent; Pat Quigley, secretary; and Margie Henderson,
treasurer.
Also Jacque Placette, reporter; Patti McMurty,
historian; Mrs. Grace Drake, parliamentarian: Me-
lanie Wray, vocational delegate and Ruby Bluestein,
Student Government representative. The nominating
committee will be composed of Christy Hutto, senior;
Claudine Allums, junior; and Judy Cummins, so-
phomore.
Briggs elected TACT head
Dr. Kenneth R. Briggs, associate professor of se-
condary education, was elected president of the: Lamar
chapter of the Texas Association of College Teachers
(TACT) on Tuesday, April 30.
Other new officers are Dr. Kenneth L. Dorris, as-
sociate professor of chemistry, vice-president; Dr.
Vernon H. Griffin, associate professor of elementary
education, secretary; and Mrs. Jewel D. Blanton, as-
sociate professor of speech, treasurer.
Dr. Urbano to study in Spain
Under a grant from Lamar Research Center, Dr.
Victoria Urbano, associate professor of modern lan-
guages, will spend the summer in Madrid and Bar-
celona, to observe the techniques of contemporary
Spanish plays. -
The main purpose of Dr. Urbano’s research is to
write a second volume of “Teatro Espanol”, a text-
book which she wrote. It has been adopted by the Uni-
versity of Texas, the University of Michigan and La-
mar University.
Two previous books written by Dr. Urbano were se-
lected by the University of Houston and used in a course
entitled “Spanish-American Contemporary Women Wri-
ters”.
One of her works is 'Platero y 1X1”, a book of
poetic prose in Madrid in 1962. The other book is
an anthology of short stories published in Mexico City,
including 'Avery Island”.
Dr. Urbano has been recognized by the government
of Costa Rica, for her contributions to the literature
of Spanish-America.
Fraternity announces ‘Rose’
The International Brotherhood of Delta Sigma Pi, the
professional business fraternity, is proud to announce
Debby Johnson of Port Neches as the reigning ‘Rose
of Delta Sig”.
Miss Johnson's coronation was held during the annual
Rose Ball in April.
New fraternity officers for the upcoming year were
also installed at the Rose Ball. They are: Norman
Young, president; Norris Patterson, senior vice presi-
dent; Terry Spanks, vice president of pledge education;
Chuck Beard, vice president of professional activities;
Clayton Trier, treasurer; Steve Hardy, secretary and
Jack Wolford, chancellor.
Larry Dubose was voted Delta Sig of the Year.
Advisors discuss mass com program
Lamar’s Advisory Board for the com-
munications degree program heard a pro-
gress report on the program April 24
at the group’s spring meeting in the Set-
zer Student Center.
The Advisory Board consists of repres-
entatives of Beaumont, Port Arthur, and
Orange newspapers, radio and television
stations,- and advertising agencies.
Dr. DeWitte T. Holland, head, Speech
Department, summarized developments
in broadcasting, journalism and advertis-
ing since the board was organized on Oc-
tober 3, 1972.
Jerry Hudson, instructor of speech and
director of radio and television, outlined
proposed programming for the FM radio
station expected to go on the air in Sep-
tember. The station, KVLU-FM, will
transmit on a frequency of 91.3 mega-
hertz. The signals will cover an area
bounded by Sabine Pass on the south,
near Sulphur, La., on the east, Colme-
sneil on the north and Sour Lake on the
west.
The station is expected to sign on at 2
p.m. and broadcast until midnight on
Mondays through Fridays and from noon
until midnight Saturdays. Sunday’s sched-
ule calls for broadcasting from noon until
11 p.m.
In the print area, R. H. Wilkerson, as-
sistant professor of communications, re-
ported that Lamar had been accepted for
membership in the Texas Journalism Ed-
ucation Council. Lamar’s request was
approved unanimously at the February
meeting held in conjunction with the Texas
Daily Newspaper Association meeting in
Brownsville in February.
Wilkerson also explained that prelimi-
nary steps have been made to seek appro-
val of a certification program in journa-
lism. Upon completion of a list of be- •
havioral objectives, a request will be sub-
mitted to the Texas Education Agency.
Also attending the meeting were Dr.
Edward R. McIntosh, associate professor
of elementary education, who teaches
photography; and Dr. W Patrick Harri-
gan, assistant professor of speech, one
of the planners of the mass communi-
cations degree program.
The following media representatives at-
tending were as follows. Bob Houston,
Leonard Duckett and Ken Crossman of the
Beaumont Enterprise and Journal; James
B. Quigley and Bob Axelson from the
Orange Leader and Mayo Wells and George
Jinks from The News.
Area radio stations were represented
by Lenny Bruce for KLVI and KBPO, Ed
Dittert for KAYC and KAYD and Roy
L. Lemons for KJET and KWIC.
Representing television were David Lane
and Ed Parsons for KFDM-TV and Bob
Schnarr for KJAC-TV.

Joyce Bauman, instructor of home eco-
nomics was appointed teacher-counselor
for Scholastic International’s 1973 Euro-
pean summer study-travel program.
Miss Bauman is now gathering a group
of high school and college students which
she will escort for a six-week tour which
will focus on foods, fashions and furnish-
ings in Rome, Paris, Copenhagen, Lon-
don, Florence, Milan, Davos and Dijon-
Autun.
Cost of the study tour is $1,235 which
includes round-trip air fare from New
York, all meals, all living accomoda-
tions, and travel within the six countries
traveled. Tentative departure date has
been set at July 2.
Miss Bauman holds a bachelors degree
in foods and nutrition from Kansas State
University and masters in food science
from Iowa State University. In addition to
teaching, she has studied foods, fashions
and family living in 10 European coun-
tries.
She joined the staff in September, and is
teaching foods and nutrition.
Students on the tour will be fully covered
by insurance, and Scholastic International
publisher of 32 classroom periodicals,
has carefully followed travel guidelines
issued by the U.S. Department of Health,
Education and Welfare, Miss Bauman
said.
