Homecoming finalists to be elected
Blood drive
begins today
By DONNA BARRANGER
of the U.P. Staff
Voting for the five Homecoming
finalists will be held today in the Setzer
Center from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., according
to Bobbie Applegate, Program Director
for Student Activities.
Voting machines will be located in the
Setzer Center only, said Applegate, and
students must vote for five candidates
on their ballots or their vote will be in-
valid.
We really want to stress this fact,”
she added. Students must have five
names circled on their ballots or they
will be immediately cancelled.”
There will be no absentee voting,
primarily because of the provisions
made for the election and the fact that
the names of the five finalists will be
announced at 9 p.m. today on the eighth
floor of the Gray Library, she ex-
plained.
The SGA Election Commission,
headed by Executive Vice-President
Steve Scott will be responsible for con-
ducting the election and tabulating the
results, she added.
Members of the Student Senate will
work the polls, and the ballots will be
numbered and students’ ID cards
validated, according to Scott.
"Bobbie Applegate will be present
during all tabulation of the votes by
students,” said Scott. This is to insure
the validity of the election, and prevent
A NIGHT AT
THE FAIR
Carnival lights flashing
into a crisp
October night.
Screams of excitement
from the rides
and the midway.
Small young eyes glowing
with wonder and awe,
Fingers sticky
with cotton candy,
faces covered with com.
The ferris wheel spins
till they're dizzy
with merriment,
The wind stings their eyes
and their ears begin to roar
Till the night rushes on
and the bodies wear down,
Sleep sneaks up
and steals the fun,
Ah, but there's just nothing
quite like a night
at the fair.

any illegal action, he added.
Tabulation of the votes will begin
around 4:30 p.m., he said, so that the
entire count will be finalized by 9 p.m.
At that time the five finalists will be an-
nounced on the eighth floor of the Gray
Library. Finalists are asked to be
present, along with their escorts if they
wish, according to Applegate.
“I feel that under the circumstances,
the election will be pulled off as
smoothly as possible, and I urge
everyone to get out and vote,” said
Scott.
All complaints concerning the elec-
tion must be registered in writing and
filed with him by 7 p.m. tonight, he ad-
ded.
The Blood Center of Southeast Texas
blood drive will be today in the Setzer
Center Ballroom from 8:00 a.m. until
2:00p.m.
The blood drive of Oct. 7 tripled last
semester’s total, according to Monica
Parks, this year’s Blood Drive chair-
man.
Parks said that 166 pints were collec-
ted on the seventh, and the goal for
today’s drive is 200 pints.
Kegs of beer will be awarded to the
fraternities with the highest total and
percentage of donors.
Parks said that if a person donates
blood to the center, then his immediate
family is covered for an unlimited
amount of blood within the next year.
Regents to meet tomorrow
By TIM KRAUSE
of the UP staff
The Lamar University Board of
Regents will meet tomorrow at 9 a.m.
on the eighth floor of the Gray Library.
One of the policies up for con-
sideration and review is the revision of
the alcoholic beverage on-campus
policy. The board approved the plan for
a pizza parlor type facility last July 21.
The plan needed the approval of a city
ordinance variance by the Beaumont
City Council before it could be started.
The city council said that it would ap-
prove the variance if the Board of
Regents would re-approve the policy.
Other proposals to be considered are
Finance Committee recommendations,
the consideration of small class and
enrollment reports, a land purchase
and the transfer of land in Port Arthur,
renovations on the Orange campus, the
purchase of properties on East Lavaca,
renovations on the Port Arthur campus,
Building Committee recommendations
and the approval of estimated ex-

SGA supports alcohol sale
By DONNA BARRANGER
of the U.P. staff
The Student Government Association
(SGA) passed a resolution “supporting
the Vice-President of Student Affairs in
the matter of sales of alcoholic
beverages on the Lamar. University
Campus” in its Oct. 18 meeting. The
vote was 38-3.
The resolution, submitted by Senator
Byron Balentine, sophomore govern-
ment and pre-law major, reinforced the
SGA’s position on a revised alcohol
policy for Lamar. The issue will be on
the agenda for tomorrow’s Board of
Regents meeting, scheduled for 9 a.m.
Another proposal "strongly” recom-
mending that President C. Robert Kem-
ble not discontinue December
graduation was submitted by Isabel
Nart, graduate student. The bill, op-
posing the Academic Council of Deans’
recommendation to Kemble that the
commencement to discontinue, Was
