Grand slam..
Lennar Bridge Club has first meet
by Ira J. Smith
Bidding
When the dust cleared Thurs-
day evening, Feb. 1, my partner •
(Ardeshir Azodi) and I sat tied
for last place while newcomers
Keith Watson and Patricia Grif-
fin by far outplayed the field of
eight pairs and ran away with
first place at Lamar Bridge
Club’s second official meeting
in the Facul|y Lounge of the
Setzer Center^ Richard Burgess
and Dennis Stephens finished a
distant second followed closely
by Geoffrey and Judson Price
in third.
There were no solid slam hands
all evening, but the following hand
came closes and proved to be
extraordinary.

casual evening of duplicate

spade distribution was held by
East-West on Board #15 in a
4-spade contract played by East.

The above sequence of bidding
transpired at our table. Playing
the 4-club contract, I trumped the
diamond lead, drew trumps, fin-
essed the King of hearts, and ran
hearts on the board, discarding
the three spade losers from my
hand, making 7 clubs.
Four hearts was olayed at
another table by South, making
7 hearts, with a diamond lead
from West. The top board for
East-West came when a 4-dia-
mond bid by East was allowed to
ride; the contract was setonefor
just 100 points. Top board for
North-South was a risky 6-club
contract considering the three
spade losers, but it naturally
made 7 clubs easily, with the
obvious diamond lead.
Everyone present had an en-
tertaining night and we cordially
invite all interested students and
faculty members to attend our
next meeting at 7:30 p.m, Thurs-
As East, what is your best me-
thod of drawing trumps? -------- -- ---

SGA proposes consumer guide
Galloway to lead state body
H.C. Galloway, vice president
of finance, will assume the presi-
dency of the Texas Association of
State Senior Colleges and Univer-
sity Business Officers next Jan-
uary.
Galloway will succeed James
H. Colvin, vice president for
business affairs at the University
of Texas at Austin. Other officers
of the statewide organization are
the vice presidents of business of
Sam Houston State University,
Midwestern University, and
Southeast Texas State University.
A native Beaumonter, Galloway
attended Lamar Junior College
from 1936 to 1938. After receiv-
ing his bachelors degree from
North Texas State University, he
taught briefly at South Park High
School. Following service in
WW II, he earned his masters
from the University of Colorado.
He has been employed at Lamar
since 1946, serving as assistant
business manager until 1957,
when he was promoted to business
manager. He became comp-
troller in 1961.
In the Tuesday meeting of the
Student Government Association,
representative Larry Tolson
suggested that the SGA publish
a LU Student Consumer’s Guide
for the student body next fall.
The guide would contain infor-
mation on student housing on and
off campus, list area business
that extend student discounts,
offer student charge accounts and
cash student checks and other
services.
A committee was formed to
continue work on this proposal.
Also formed was a committee
to represent college student in-
terest in the state legislature.
Presiding officer Bill Urquhart
opened the floor to further dis-
cussion on one of the major ques-
tions facing similar committees
at several universities-the ques-
tion of lowering adult status to
18 years of age. Urquhart stated
that so far 23 states have done
so. and that Texas was not one
of them.
It was announced that an En-
vironmental Awareness meeting
will be held Feb. 12, at 3 p.m.
in Room 209 of the Setzer Stu-
dent Center.
Also , SGA president David
Bernsen said that the SGA will
serve as the campus coordinator
for the Nicaraguan Earthquake
Relief Fund drive. The goal for
the fund is $500.
Apartment management offered
An eight-week training course
in apartment management will be
offered by the Office of Continu-
ing Education each Wednesday
starting Feb. 7 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
in Room 101, Education building.

orientation sessions and work-
shop, will feature sessions of se-
curing prospective residents,

ing, patterns of persuasion, resi-
dent relations, swimming pool

and symptoms.

ster for the course by mailing a
$40 check or money order, pay-
able to Lamar University, to Con-
tinuing Education, Apartment
