said. “Now they are living much longer.”
Simpson will talk on the improvements
of medication. He will also address neu-
ropathy, which is numbness in various parts
of the body. Brooks said he will address
dementia, which is almost like Alzheimer’s
Disease. Many people with HIV and
AIDS are suffering from these two dis-
eases
Delaney is the founder/director of
PROJECT INFORM, an AIDS organiza-
tion in San Francisco. He will speak at
10:15 a.m.
A luncheon address will begin at 11:45
a.m. and be presented -by Ben Hansen,
Beaumont Enterprise managing editor.
Hansen will discuss Tun Halley’s efforts
to inform the public about AIDS and HTV.
Hansen will begin the conference with a
dedication to Tim and acknowledgment of
the Tim Halley Memorial Scholarship
Fund.
Halley wrote an article about his own
experiences with AIDS.
Halley said he wanted to “put a name
and face on AIDS,” and that is why he gave
up his privacy and went public with his con-
dition.
A Tim Halley Memorial Scholarship
Fund has been set up, and the trustees hope
to award a scholarship of at least $500 each
year to a high school or college journalist
who exemplifies Tim’s efforts to inform the
public about the dangers of HIV and
AIDS.
Another prominent speaker, author
Theresa Nelson, will conduct a workshop
about books available on the subject.
Nelson is from Beaumont and has worked
many years as an actress and teacher of cre-
ative dramatics for Theatre Under the Stars
in Houston.
Nelson is the author of “Earthshine,” a
book which was inspired by the life and
death of Texas native Patrick Hamilton.
The book was dedicated to Hamilton’s
daughter, Jennifer.
“Earthshine” is seen through the eyes of
a 12-year-old, Slim McGranahan, as her
father’s struggle with AIDS reaches its cli-
max. The book won the 1994 Child Study
Book Award given annually by the
Children’s Book Committee at Bank Street
College.
Brooks said that those interested to pre-
register because the enrollment for the
conference is limited to 450.
“We have about 300 people registered
already, and we want people to pre-register
if they can,” Brooks said.
Registration forms for this conference
are still available. Contact Bonnie Brooks
at 832-8338 for additional information.

He also talked about environmental assessment.
He said the importance of a warm, friendly atmo-
sphere cannot be overemphasized as it relates to a
student’s overall university experience. He said all
aspects of the environment have to be considered
from minimizing barriers between students to park-
ing.
In response to student questions on some ideas
about enhancing student involvement and multicul-
tural aspects, Heller suggested touching students in
their environment, listening to their needs and find-
ing solutions to fit them. He suggested forming stu-
dent cultural committees responsible for bringing
various cultures to students. Two goals for those
committees would be to meet the needs of a particu-
lar population and offer programs for the majority of
students to learn about that specific culture.
The visit ended with discussion about recruiting
teams, student retention and community involve-
ment with the university.
“The community should recognize student success
in the community, appreciate what students con-
tribute and thank them for what they do,” he said.
