Lamar students, faculty well represented
at TASIMJAE despite limited participation
Holly Westbrook
UP staff writer
The 16th annual TASIMJAE (The Art
Studio, Inc. Member Juried Art Exhibition)
opening reception was Saturday, giving the
community its first look at some local and
non-local artist’s work and the winners of
this year’s competition.
Although there was much diversity
this year, through both artists and medi-
ums, the attendance by Lamar students
was not as strong as was hoped for, Greg
Busceme, studio director, said.
“I really expected more students,”
Tracy Danna, TASI assistant director, said.
“We moved it from May to April so it
wouldn’t be a conflict for the senior show
(at Lamar).”
“Maybe next year,” Busceme said.
Despite low participation from stu-
dents, some professors did enter, including
Kurt Dyrhaug who received an honorable
mention and Ray Daniel, a professor at
Lamar Port Arthur, who won second place.
There were 64 artists who entered
their works, Danna said, and 53 who made
the cut to be in the exhibition. A grand
total of 107 works of art were entered with
81 moving on, she said.
“Any juried competition is good, espe-
cially for students,” Andy Taylor,
University Press photo editor, said. “It
(TASIMJAE) is really nice to have espe-
cially here in Beaumont because the juror
is so much more approachable.”
Taylor is an active member of TASI
who entered two works that made it to the
exhibit and encouraged many of his friends
to enter the contest as well.
“The stuff I did enter was sort of an
experiment,” he said, “trying different
processes. But I was really pleased with the
way they came out. If you want to try
something new, you can acutely put it out
there and you can get feedback on it in a
real gallery setting instead of showing it to
your friends at school and they say, “Oh,
that’s cool.” You can actually frame it,
hang it up, and then...sit back...watch peo-
ple and see how they react.”
Taylor told Yukie Yagi Williams, a
sophomore from Japan, about the contest
and she entered. Both of her photographs
of another female student made it into the
show.
“I’m taking color photography this
semester,” Williams said, explaining why
she entered the works that she did. “Color
photography is a new medium for me.”
Taylor feels that many students didn’t
enter because their mind sets were that the
work they create in school for an assign-
ment is nothing more than that and didn’t
think they should enter them.
“That’s not giving yourself credit,”
Taylor said. “It might have been that
nobody knew about it, but I don’t think
that’s the case.”
Out of the 63 artists who entered the
exhibit, only about 10 of those were Lamar
students and professors.
“I honestly didn’t know the show was
coming up as soon as it was,” Mike Shield,
a grad student, said.
“TASIMJAE is a pretty big deal in this
area,” Taylor said. “I think that more inter-
action would be great. I think students
need to be a little more involved with the
Art Studio.”
The studio is located about a mile-
and-a-half from Lamar, he said, and it’s
just stupid not to come down the street
where there’s a gallery.
“You can get involved in something
that is in the mainstream of what you
would be doing when you graduate. So
why not get involved,” he said.
Best of Show went to Jamie Boling, of
Iowa, for his oil on canvas titled “Self
Portrait,” along with the $100 prize and his
own show at the Art Studio, Inc. in May
2003.
Daniel won second place with his unti-
tled charcoal work on a gessoed board, ref-
erenced to by “The Great Commission”
which is written on the piece itself, and the
$75 prize.
Phil Fitzpatrick, a retired art professor,
won third place and the $50 prize with his
print “Eternal City.”
Other artists represented with Lamar
connections include Dana Dorman, Jamie
Kessler, Grace Megnet, Rudy Reyes,
Monroe Oxley, and Jackie Stubblefield.
The winning entry in the
2002 TASIMJAE competi-
tion is “Self Portrait After
Caravaggio,” above, by
Jamie Boling.
Among the Lamar students
works represented in the
show are Andy Taylor’s
copy transfers, left, and
photographs by Yukie
Williams.
