Verde stimulated by rebuilding mission
Amy Upshaw
UP staff writer
John Michael Verde felt a
calling to minister at age 12 and
willfully accepted his spiritual
duty throughout his adolescent
years. Almost 20 years later
Verde has another mission —
guiding the teen-agers at the
Texas Academy of Leadership
in the Humanities through their
first year of college.
“The opportunity to come
into a little world that was
demoralized and to be a part of
the rejuvenation was a task I
felt would be very stimulating,”
the 32-year-old student services
coordinator for the Lamar
University academy said. He
has been there since 1997 after
spending three years teaching in
the English department.
Verde and his colleagues are
slowly rebuilding the program
after it was scarred by contro-
versy and even the death of one
student on campus and the acci-
dental drownings of two other
students in Lake Sabine. The
program is designed for gifted
and talented students to attend
college before graduating high
school and earning credit for
both high school and college.
Twenty-six students are en-
rolled this semester.
“What it is about is commu-
nity building — taking these 26
young people from different
cities, big and small, with vastly
different personalities and facil-
itating a coming together.”
Verde’s dedication to this
task doesn’t end when the eight-
hour work day is through. He
often spends his free time shut-
tling students to volleyball
games, arranging their sched-
ules and offering advice, he
said.
Verde, a Beaumont native,
jokingly says his dog and cat
don’t mind that he spends so
much time away from home.
In doing this, I am growing,”
he said. “When you have 26 gift-
ed and talented students around
you, you can become keenly
aware of your shortcomings.
That’s invaluable feedback.”
He was a preacher, pig
farmer and taxi driver before
becoming a college professor —
professions he said that allow
people to “exchange their lives
in the form of stories, except for
maybe the pig farmer.”
