Phi Kappa Phi inducts 52 into honor society
Fifty-two Lamar University
juniors and seniors were initiated into
the National Honor Society of Phi
Kappa Phi at its spring initiation ban-
quet held April 30 on the eighth floor
of Gray Library.
Seniors elected to membership
ranked in the upper 10 percent of the
August 1997 graduating class. Juniors
ranked in the top 5 percent of their
graduating class. Guest speaker at the
ceremony was Larry Simmons, an
attorney with Germer and Gertz.
Simmons is also a magna cum laude
graduate of Lamar University and a
Phi Kappa Phi member.

In addition, Ronald H. Fritze, pro-
fessor of history, was named recipient
of the 1997 Phi Kappa Phi Teaching
Effectiveness Award. The award,
which carries a stipend of $1,000, was
presented to Fritze at the banquet.
To be eligible for the award, those
nominated must be full-time, tenured
faculty members and must have exem-
plified effectiveness in the classroom.
Nominations are made by student
members of Phi Kappa Phi.
Fritze came to Lamar University
in 1984. He earned his bachelor’s
degree from Concordia College, his
master’s from Louisiana State
University and his Ph.D. from the
University of Cambridge.
Students are nominated for the
award by their department heads.
