A bad wreck was averted in the local
railroad yards here yest.-rdav morning.

train No. a was late and was coming
down the grade at a rapid rate when it
ran on to a siding, the switch of which
somebody had carelessly left open.
Fortunately there were no other cars on
the siding at the time and the engineer
of the passenger, by reversing his en-
gine and applying the air, was able to
stop the train without any harm being
done.

A Small Ft re.
A barn on McKinney street, belonging
to John A Hann, caught fire in the
roif Tuesday morning, from a passing
traction engine, it is thought, but was
speedily extinguished by the fire de-
partment, which made a good run.
The loss was slight, but was not covered
by insurance.
A Peculiar Egg.
J. F. McKnight of Aubrey has an
egg in his possession that is something
of a curiosity. The egg was laid by a
black Minorca hen and its curiotiBiioss
is in its size, which is abnormally
large, measuring 10'4 inches in cir-
cumference lengthwise and S'j cross-
wise. The egg weighed four ounces.

A Rain.
A hard rain, lasting about an hour
and a half, fell early Saturday morning.
It was sufficient to lay the dust. The
rain was followed by a cold norther,

An Increase Over Last Year's Llut of the
Itijf Taxpayers.
City Tax Assessor and Collector W.
H. Cleaveland yesterday finished his
rolls as "okd" hy the city board of
equalization. The total value of city
property is 11,289,610, an increase of
$34,240 over the rolls of 1H98. The to-
tal taxes assessed on this valuation
amounts to 116,217, of which school
house and improvement bonds No. 1,
get $257 92; street and bridge fund,
$1,934 41; waterworks, $25579 22 • gen-
eral, $3,224 02; city hall and rtreet im-
provement bonds, $451 18; school main-
tenance, $6, <48 05 ; poll, #486. A list of
the taxpayers whose taxes amount to

Last Friday was the natal day of
"Ould Oireland's'' patron saint, Saint
Patrick, and the favorite color of the
Emerald Isle—green—was conspicuous-
ly worn by the Irish-Americans and

Carthage, 111., for nearly 15 years the
estate of Henry Egley, deceased, of
Warsaw, 111., has at last been settled
and the rightful heire, of whom Ad
Egley, a citizen of Denton, is one, will
now come into their shares. The other
heirs of the estate, the value of which
is estimated at about $30,000, are Geo.
Egley and Mrs. Katie El man of War-
saw, II!., and Jno. A. Knox of
Burlington, Iowa.

Looking for Investment.
John H King of Pilot Point was
down this week on business. With
him was Bedford Cunningham, a for-
mer citizen of Collin county, who has
between S12.000 and $20,000 to invest
and will put it in Denton county land if
he can find a tract on which he can
make satisfactory terms.
Improvements at PIlut rolnt.
Work has already been begun on the
$10,000 oil mill at Pilot Point and it
will be in operation in time to handle
the fall crop. It will be on the west
side of the railroad.
Anew elevator is being erected also,
which will have a capacity of between
90,000 and 100,000 bushels.
Work is going on on a new gin and
the waterworks system, the water sup-
ply for which will be obtained from ar-
t«sian wells, is being put in.

was repeated he said, "Come in." No

R. P. Ballew an old Federal soldier j
and a well known resident of Denton !
county, died at his home near Mingo
last Saturday night, aged about 001
years. The interment took place Sun-i
day afternoon. The deceased was for
a number of years a resident of Denton
and for a while was in business here,
and was a prominent member of the j
Grand Army of the Republic.
