AMSTkRDAm, Sept. 2'J.—A demonstra-
tion participated in by 5,000 socialist
workmen, who marched In procession,
took place here. The speakers advocated
universal suffrage. Everything passed
off quietly.
A Pig-Tall Tragedy.
Phknix, Sept. 23.—Competition for
the affections of a fascinating young
daughter of the flowery kingdom led to
the fatal shooting here of Wong Tai by
Wong Ti, Wong Chung and Wong
Akuk. Wong Ti. has fled, it is supposed,
to Tucson. The others arc under arrest.
Work Kesnnted.
Cheyenne, Sept. 23.—Work was re-
sumed at Rock Springs coal mines yes-
terday. All the Chinamen went to work,
also all the white mechanics, engineer,
blacksmiths, lir«men and carpenters em-
ployed in the mines, while the coal
miners declined to work and wero paid
off. Everything is quiet and no trouble
anticipated.
Tlie New York Star on Sliver,
NkW York, Sept. 23.—The Star this
morning has the following: The paper
money newspapers say people do not
like the silver dollar, but the Star knows
better. Plain people like silver dollars.
Market women like them. Hack drivers
like them. Newsboys dote on them with
delight. Mechanic likes the eighteen
silver dollars which he gets on Saturday
afternoon. He is not distressed by the
weight of them. The Star will sell its
whole editorial force including the cat
for silver dollars.

The Regulars Win.
New York, Sept. 23.—The Hilton
trophy, worth 83000, was shot for at
Creed more yesterday by three teams of
tweniy-four each, the United States reg-
ular Rimy team and the New York and
Pennsylvania teams. Shooting was at
200, .">00 and 700 yards, seven shots at
each distance, standing at lirst range and
optional attitudes at Ihe others. The
regulars won with 907 out of a possible
of 1200 points, New York state team 90S
and the Pennsylvania state team 957
points.
A Cute Minnesota Man.
New York, Sept. 22.—Win. Curtis, a
coarse looking negro, was brought to
headquat ter». He was charged with be-
ing implicated in a sawdust swindle, of
which H. J. Severance, of Adams, Mon-
roe county, Minn., was the intended vic-
tim. The real plotters escaped, and
only their tool, the negro, fell into the
hands of the police.
Mr. Severance got letters at his, home
offering to sell counterfeit money. The
letters were signed John Kellcher, of
New York. Mr. Severance came here
according to Kellclier's instructions, fol-
lowing out the route laid down for him
by Kellcher. On arriving here he was
to put up at the Ashland house under an
assumed name. Mr. Severance followed
out these orders, but notified the police,
and detectives were placed in the room
adjoining his. Curtis oame to the hotel,
inspected the register and then went up
to Severance's room, where he prese*ted
a letter purporting to be from Kellcber.
Curtis, who is a runner for Barney Me
Gnire, one of the leaders in the counter-
feit bill swindle, was sent to prison for
six months.

Nooalks, Sept. 23.—The postmaster
general has ordered that the exchange of
malls between the postofflees of Benson,
Arizona, and Nogales, Mexico, be discon-
tinued and that all Mexican mails here-
tofore forwarded via Benson, Arizona, to
be included in the exchangs between that
office and Nogale?, Mexico.

Washington, D. I)., Sept. '23.—When
Messr* Kincannon of Mississippi and
Wood of Tennessee were appointed com-
missioners to treat with the Creeks,
Cherokees and Seminoles tor the relin-
quishment of their right to the Oklahoma
nnd adjoining lands in the Indian terri-
tory, as provided by the late congress.the
president and secretary of the interior
did not appreciate the scope
and magnitude of the duty
involved. While these gentlemen are of
the i highest personal chatacter.it has
since been suggested to the president and
Secretary Lamar that the commission
should be composed of men of national
reputation, familiar with the Indian pro-
blem. Jn deference to this Tiew, the
Presldeut revoked the appointment of
Messrs. Kincannon and Wood and will
name other parties for this commission.
It I» likely that Mr. Atkins, commission-
er of Indian affairs, will be designated as
chairman of the commission, which will
