“Pee Wee” was a little waif
who lived in the Saigon Market
Place. By day she scrounged
for a living among the open stalls
loaded with merchandise of all
kinds; by night she wondered up
and down our side of the mar-
ket or lay atop an empty stall
to stare at the moon. One night
she became frightened by the
soldiers and hid in the stair-
well by my room door in the
hotel.
The first time I saw Pee
Wee I really saw only the top
of her head and two big, black
eyes peeping over the top of
a stall and into the open lobby
of my hotel. The lobby, in
reality, was a stall during the
day. At night, with the mar-
ket closed and quiet, you sat
practically in the street until
the big steel doors were closed.
1 was sitting in the lobby com-
plaining about the power being
off that close to midnight, which
meant no air conditioning and, as
important, no ice in the ice bo:

The students auditorium show will be at 8:20 a.m. and 6:45 p.m.

year this District’s roots go back
to the 1851 date when less than
a dozen men met in Houston’s
English Presbyterian Church to
organize under the name of the
First Evangelical Lutheran Synod
of Texas (Sjmod I).
The English Presbyterian con-
gregation’s church edifice was one
block farther south than the then
southern limit of the city of Hous-
ton, Texas Avenue. The church
on the southeast corner of block
68, at Main Street and Capitol
Avenue, and the building faced
Main St. The original building
was of pine, shaped like a crack-
er box with a gable roof, covered

New Building
Bellaire Methodist Church will
have Bishop Paul E. Martin as
special guest for the consecration
of the new buildings now being
completed. Bishop Martin will
speak at the 9:30 and 11 a.m.
services Sunday, April 24. The
Sunday School classrooms, Youth
division and Adult division of the
church will be consecrated Sun-
day.
Dr. Wayne McClesky, District
Superintendant of Houston West
District will assist Bishop Mar-
tin with the dedication.
The Rev. Mr. Don Peevy is the
minister of Bellaire Methodist.
