A Brave Girl
Friday of last week,
windy day, Seth Lowrev and son
left their home to haul water.
Mrs. Lowrey, who is an invalid,
and daughter, Miss Lizzie, were
left alone. Soon the house was
discovered to be on fire. Only a
bucket and a half of" water was
in the house. Miss Lizzie secur-
ed a ladder, and hastilp ascend-
ed to the fiire with a bucket of
water, a& she threw the water,
the ladder slipued, and she fell
to the ground, as there was noth-
ing to break her fall.
Finding no bones were broken,
she pulled the ladder into the
kitchen, opened the skuttle, car-
ried up and threw on milk, in
lieu of water, until the fire was
extinguished.
When the need of action had
passed Miss Lizzie, felt fhe ef-
fects of the fall, the shock she had
received, and the great strain oa
her nerves. Had she not pos-
sessed the faculty to act coolly
and quickly in danger, or had
the fall from the ladder rendered
her unconscious, or broken a
limb, the] house would undoubt-
edly have burned and both she
and mother perished in the
flamed. M. M.
