Zoning of New
Bellaire Area
Being Studied
(Continued from Page 1)
was aired at the meeting concern-
ing a proposal of Miles Strickland
to place a business establishment
at the corner of Rice and Ever-
green.
At least five persons at the
meeting asked to be recorded as
not being in favor of having a
business establishment on that
J corner .
Carl Mantey, who lives near the
proposed structure, stated that to
keep Mr. Strickland from build-
ing a business on that property
was one of the main reasons for
joining the City of Bellaire.
Mr. Strickland countered by
saying that he began construction
of the proposed business before
he was in the city.
At this point Mayor Madison
Rayburn asked Mr. Strickland
what type of business was pro-
posed for the area.
Mr. Strickland said that he was
not ready “to make public what
it is going to be.”
If the council, however, accepts j
the proposal of the planning
board for that particular terri-
tory, it will be impossible under
Bellaire laws to construct any
type of a business there.
Very little other business was
conducted at the council meeting.

Contract Is Let For New

combination junior and senior
high school as was done in the
Burbank area recently.
This subject was not brought
up at the school board meeting,
however, and the contract was let
for the construction of a high
school. It was not specified wheth-
er it would be junior or senior.
Ewing Werlein, chairman of the
school board, when asked after
the meeting whether or not there
would be any senior students at
the new school, said:
“If it becomes necessary to use
some of the rooms for senior stu-
dents. we will probably have to
do so.”
Mr. Browning said later that “as
! long as the school board did not
specify that there would be senior
students at the school, his com-
mittee would take no action.
Mrs. Browning did say, how-
j ever, that if the matter comes up
in the future, the committee would
probably protest having a com-
bination junior and senior high
school.
