Civil War Class
Offered At CCCC
A class focusing on the ef-
fects of the Civil War and
Reconstruction will be of-
fered during the spring
semester at Collin County
Community.
Larry Collins, history pro-
fessor, said the idea to teach a
history class on just the Civil
Wa and Reconstruction
came from his own interest in
the period.
“One of my hobbies is stu-
dying the Civil War," said
Collins. “It's one of my areas
of expertise and something I
am really interested in."
The class is being offered
because of a renewed interest
in the Civil War period. The
original airing of the Public
Broadcasting Service (PBS)
series on the Civil War drew
12 million viewers nationwide
- the most viewers to ever
watch a PBS series, accor-
ding to Collins.
The course will be comprised
of the test, “Ordeal by Fire:
The Civil War and
Reconstruction,” audio-
visual presentations (from
the PBS series), oral presen-
tations from students and
outside speakers. Students
will have the opportunity to
visit a Confederate war
museum, to view a civil war
reenactment, and to '.our an
antebellum town in Texas.
The class is listed in the spr-
ing schedule of classes as
“History 298: Civil War and
Reconstruction.’’ The class >
meets from 6:30-9:15 p.m.
Monday nights at Central
Campus in McKinney.
“This type of class is usual-
ly not offered at community
colleges. It won’t just be a
straight lecture class, but a
seminar type of class where
the students will share their
knowledge of their particular
area of interest,” he said.
The students themselves
will assist in teaching the
course by sharing the infor-
mation that interests them.
“People who have a strong in-
terest in the Civil War can
share their knowledge with
the class. It could be slavery,
firearms, battles, genealogy,
the role discussions
everybody will add
something to the class,” said
Collins.
Students will receive three
credit hours for completing
the course, which will
transfer as an elective to
most four-year colleges.
Registration for spring
classes at CCCC is scheduled
for Jan. 6-8 at both campuses.
For more information on the
course, call Collins at
548-6820 or 542-1455.
