Dr. Donald F. Goodall, chair-
man of the University of Texas
department of art, will bring the

A parade of personalities who
figured in the museum’s crea-
! tion includes past presidents Dr.
W. P. Gerhart, Mrs. Morgan
Jones and John A. Deffebach;
building committee heads L. S.
Munger, chairman, and Nor-
man Fitzgerald, co-chairman;
Mrs. Bernard Hanks, contribu-
tions; Woodlief Brown, archi-
tect; Mayor Lee Byrd and Jim
Murphy, current museum presi-
dent.

Free of Debt
With six large adjoining:
rooms, the air-conditioned mu-(

ing in acoustic-tiled ceilings.

storage and an efficiency
kitchen.
The 5,000-sqpare-foot building
is on a 150-foot square lot leased
to the museum by- the City of
Abilene. Completed on Nov. 1,
the arts museum is free of deb\
as a result of gifts from over
75 donors.
Efforts to establish a museum
and art center for Abilene were
begun in November 1937. Dr.
Gerhart was first president of
the group whose first home was
in the old postoffice building.
Later it was moved to a small
office at 742 Cedar next to the
West Texas Chamber of Com-
merce.
Mrs. Morgan Jones served as
president for 21 years. Deffe-
bach brought the 27-year dream
into reality and out of debt dur-
ing his term as president.
\ccording to exhibits chair-
man Robert Miller, lecturer in
art at McMurry College, a num-
ber of outstanding collections
will be on display during the
Sunday opening and throughout
the coming w'cek.
In addition to the museum’s
permanent collection of some 70
paintings and other art, exhibits
include State Fair purchase
prize paintings for the past 10
years, loaned by the Dallas Fine
Arts Museum; Chapman Kelley,
New York prize winning artist
featured in Life Magazine and
Charles Umlauf, internationally
renowned sculptor.
. Other exhibits will be a col-
lection of paintings from Mid-
Town Galleries, New York City,
and a small collection of Salinas
paintings furnished by the Citi-
zens National Bank of Abilene,
Ed Grissom, A. B. Shelton and
Miss Vernie Newman, all of Abi-
lene. ; •
Miller pointed out that ex-
panded facilities will now make
it possible for the museum to
I feature area artists from time
i to time.
Next scheduled art show is
that of John Bryans, president
of the Washington, D. C. Water
Color Society, Dec. 4-20.
Children’s summer art classes
were begun by the Fine Arts
Museum in 1947 under the direc-
tion of MrS.J. F.‘ Boren. Last
summer’s two-week course en-
rolled 85 youngsters. Mrs. S. P.
Henagan, children’s director,
points out that .the popular pro-
gram may be expanded. Chil-
dren of Fine Arts membership
holders of $10 or more may at-
tend classes of instruction in all
media free of charge.
