The Katy trains will not run
further south than Smithville on
account of supposed yellow fever at
Houston.
Tom Everett, from commis-
sioners' precinct No. 2 was here
yesterday attending a call meeting
of the commissioners’ court.
Farmer Bob Barber of Buda was
in the city yesterday with three
bales of ootton. The Texas
Democrat is glad to see Bob
working and improving his coh-
ditioty.,,,
Mrs; Elizabeth Hughes, sister of
J. H. and Will Gary, died at Reed-
ville Tuesday night and was in-
terred at the city cemetery yester-
day evening at 4 p. m.
The commissioners court met in
called session yesterday to consider
the matter of county quarantine,
and decided to put a man on the
train to see that no persons from
yellow fever infected places invade
the county.

is so mild wa are moved to suggest
that it may have developed from
the gold fever.
We are glad to note the steady
improvement of Mr. D. P. Hop-
kins, who has been quite for sev-
eral days with dengue fever.
Martin Weiss has moved the
McMeans stock of goods to his
place of business, combining two
very large mercantile stocks of
goods in one.
James F. Combs has been en-
gaged to teach school at Goforth
this year. The school will begin
next Monday. Mr. Combs is nat-
urally a bright young mad, and
being a graduate ot Coronal is no
doubt well qualified to discharge hi»
duties as an instructor.
Mr. and Mrs. Burt Mitchell and
their two little ones, of Marpha,
are here on a visit to Mrs. Mit-
chell’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dan
McKie. Burt is just recovering
from a fall which broke him up
considerably some weeks ago. His
horse fed on him, breaking several
bones.
Mrs. Ed. R. Kone and her
daughter Miss Caroline, who have
been visiting Mrs. Kone’s brother
at Midland returned home this
morning. /
Martin Weiss has purchased the
dry goods stock of the H. A. Mc-
Means mercantile business from
Crews and Glover, who purchased
it last Week from H. A. McMeans
Mr. Weiss has secured a well-
assorted line of new goods.
Judge W. D. Wood and T. C.
Johnson have bought the old Pres-
byterian church and will move it
to their farm. Jack Riley has
been engaged to do the carpenter
work. Jack says he is thinking of
organizing a church of his own.
Nance had no more sense than
to buy a big stock of carpeting
when prices were low and pros-
pects bright. Now, while times
are dull he is going to try to sell.

trodden under the foot of man.

Commissioner J. M. Morris of
Dripping Springs passed through
here en route home from a trip to
Karnes and DeWitt counties,
Tuesday. Mr. Morris informs us
that he has sold his home near
Dripping Springs and has bought
a farm in DeWitt county. We
trust he will find a pleasant home
and a profitable investment.
The most important case to come
up this court is fit civil suit filed by
parties in New Jersey. The parties
set up a claim to half a league of
land which lies in Wren’s and O.
G. Park’s pastures. Eminent and
able counsel have been employed
on the case, which^^wnsumed five

Owing to the out-break of yellow
fever in the South the proposed trip
of the Pennsylvania-Tennessee
commission to Nashville has been
postponed. October 2 had been
set for the dedication of the Penn-
sylvania monuments at Chicka-
mauga, and two days later was to
have been Pennsylvania day at the
Nashville exposition.

City Judge Convicted.
Fort Worth, Tex., Sept. 21.—
The trial of the forgeries against
ex-City Judge Smith occupied the
Federal Court’s time today. The
arguments were concluded late
tonight and the case given to the
. _ a verdict
was rendered finding him guilty ou
two counts. Sentence was de-
ferred. The grand jury will report
tomorrow. No other cases wer
tried today.
