OVERTURE to "CORIOLANUS", Op. 62
------------------------Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
From about 1801 Beethoven produced a number of overtures and incidental pieces
for dramatic works. In 1807 he was in correspondence with the dramatist, Heinrich Joseph
von Collin, who was to supply him with a libretto, possibly of Macbeth. This never materi-
alized, but there seemed to be a revival that year of Collin's play, Coriolan, which first
came out in 1802. The violent story of the Roman aristocrat, Gaius Marcius Coriolanus,
took place about 493 B. C. It appears in Plutarch's Lives, and of course in Shakespeare's
great tragedy. In Collin's play, Coriolanus takes his own life. Beethoven was obviously
drawn to the violent story - some say because of the rather violent nature of his own life.
Wagner, in commenting on Coriolanus, advises one to forget about Collin's play and look
at a scene in Act V of Shakespeare's tragedy, when Coriolanus is confronted by his family.
Here a defiant Coriolanus is implored by his mother to cease his resistance. The lyrical
second theme of the overture suggests her attitudes.
Beethoven composed the overture at the same time he was completing the violin Con-
certo and then working on the famous Symphony No. 5. He conducted the first perfor-
mance of the overture on a subscription concert in 1807.
"BURLESKE" for Piano and Orchestra in D minor
- ---------------------------- Richard Strauss (1864-1949)
The young twenty-one year old Richard Strauss received an appointment as assistant
conductor to Hans von Bulow with the court orchestra at Meiningen in 1885. He stayed
during the winter season, even after the resignation of Bulow. Although Strauss had com-
posed much prior to this time, he devoted little time to composition while at Meiningen.
At one point he found himself serving as pianist in a presentation of the C minor Concerto
of Mozart. It was after this that he conceived the idea of composing a Scherzo for piano
and orchestra. The parts that he submitted to Hans von Bulow were called "impractical"
by the old pianist-conductor, and although he completed the work, he put it aside for nearly
five years. In 1890 Strauss was to conduct a concert for the annual musical festival of
the Allgemeiner Deutscher Musikverein at Eisenach, and the pianist, Eugen d'Albert, was
to be soloist. For this occasion Strauss brought forth his earlier work for piano and
orchestra, called it "Burleske", and with d'Albert gave the first performance on June 21,
1890. There is a certain satirical quality about the composition that is only about seven-
teen minutes long in full sonata form.
INTERMISSION
RODEO SUITE -------------------------___ Aaron Copland (1900- )
Copland composed the music for the ballet, Rodeo, during the summer of 1942, as
the result of a commission from the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. The choreography was
done by Agnes de Mille. The work, subtitled The Courting at Burning Ranch, was first pre-
sented at the Metropolitan Opera House in October of 1942. Miss deMille has described
the idea for the ballet as follows:
"Throughout the American Southwest, the Saturday afternoon rodeo is a tradition.
On the remote ranches, as well as in the trading centers and towns, the 'hands'
get together to show off their skill in roping, riding, branding and throwing....
The afternoon's exhibition is usually followed by a Saturday night dance at the
Ranch House. The theme of the ballet is basic. It deals with the problem that
