Kemp voters get rides to poll Nov. 5
By David Webb
The Monitor Correspondent
KEMP-About 100
people had voted early on
the proposal to transfer the
Kemp water and sewer
system to West Cedar
Creek Municipal Utility
District as of Oct. 30, ac-
cording to Kemp mayor
Laura Hanna Peace.
“That doesn’t seem like
a lot, but it really is quite a
bit for Kemp for early vot-
ing,” Peace said.
City officials had urged
Kemp residents to vote
early at the Kaufman
County Precinct 4 Sub-
courthouse in Kemp be-
cause voting on election
day will be at Mabank City
Hall.
“I am really urging
people to vote on this very
important issue,” Peace
said.
Volunteers will be on
hand 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
on election day at the
Kemp Sub-courthouse to
give people who need
transportation rides to
Mabank to vote, Peace
said. Anyone who is
handicapped and needs to
be picked up at home can
call STAR Trolley Transit
at (972) 563-5875 to
make an appointment.
In addition STAR will
provide transport at the
Kemp Sub-courthouse at
10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m.
for runs to Mabank City
Hall to vote and a return
trip to Kemp.
Transportation volun-
teers will include WCC-
MUD board president
Clifton Smith and Fay
Beavers, who personally
paid for the Vote Yes signs
that were posted in Kemp.
Peace said a “covert
campaign of misinforma-
tion” by unidentified
people had caused her to
work overtime trying to get
the facts out about the pro-
posal. The city’s water and
sewer system is broken,
and requires $3 million in
repairs, Peace said. The
city has $3,000 in reserves,
she said.
“I want people to make
their decision based on the
facts, not rumors,” she
added.
New buses at a $15K savings

Diane Rorie, transportation Randy Welch, drivers Sherry Profitt, Ed Schauer and Rex Criggar. “We saved
up to $15,000 because of someone else’s mistake,” Welch said. The four International buses were ordered
by Cleburne ISD but the manufacturers accidently made the buses with manual doors instead of the air-
powered doors Cleburne ISD requested.

KAUFMAN-The
Kaufman County Com-
missioners opted to not
risk igniting more dissen-
sion among county em-
ployees about salary dis-
parities during its Oct. 28
meeting.
In a 3-2 vote that re-
quired county judge Bmce
Wood to break a tie, the
court rejected a request
from Precinct 3 Justice of
the Peace Mike Smith to
use $6,000 in his budget
designated for part-time
help to increase salaries for
two administrative clerks.
Wood voted with Precinct
1 Commissioner Jimmy
Vrzalik and Precinct 4
Commissioner Tom Man-
ning against the request,
while Precinct 2 Commis-
sioner Ray Clark and Pre-
cinct 3 Commissioner
Kenneth Schoen favored
allowing the line item
transfer.
County auditor Karen
Cooper warned the court
that approving the measure
would “backfire” on them.
“I don’t want anyone to
get in trouble,” Cooper
said. “I don’t want people
thinking we are just doing
something because we
can.”
Smith argued that he
should have the flexibility
within his department’s
budget to move money tar-
geted for part-time help to
reward his two clerks for
taking on extra responsi-
bilities and to raise their
salaries to a level closer to
what some other county
employees already make.

in the 422nd District Court
in Kaufman County
Wednesday, according to
court records. Attorney

wife, Cynthia, March 30.
Eric Williams’ wife,
Kim, is also being held on
