Health program gets $130K technology grant
Funds will purchase new simulation mannequin
Special to The Monitor
ATHENS-The Trinity
Valley Community College
(TVCC) Health Science
Center (HSC) in Kaufman
is getting an update to keep
the pace in the fast-mov-
ing field of medical tech-
nology.
The Jobs and Education
for Texans (JET) Advisory
Board announced TVCC
is receiving a $130,686
grant to purchase training
equipment. The JET Board
awarded grants to 18 ap-
plicants following areview
process.
TVCC will use the grant
funds to purchase a high-
fidelity mannequin to be
used at the HSC. Simula-
tion-based learning gives
students an opportunity to
make decisions in a safe,
controlled and non-threat-
ening environment. The
human simulator, com-
monly referred to as
SimMan, improves the
quality of the nursing pro-
gram.
The HSC is already
equipped with a SimMan,
but the JET Grant funds
will be used to purchase a
new advanced mannequin
equipped with various up-
dates and 3G wireless
technology. This will ex-
pand hands-on experi-
ences for the students.
“We use the SimMan to
allow students to make in-
dependent patient care
decisions in potentially
high-risk situations,”
TVCC Health Science
Center provost Helen
Reid said.
“This comes at a great
time because we have a
new simulation coordina-
tor, Melodie Wong, who is
doing an awesome job ex-
panding the program we
have,” she added.

the HSC, including 149
sophomores and 112
freshmen during the spring,
rotate through at least two
simulation scenarios per
semester. Other health oc-
cupations programs will
also benefit from the
equipment.
During the last legislative
session, lawmakers appro-
priated $10 million for
equipment grants. The JET
Grant program for equip-
ment began in 2009, and
approximately $16.7 mil-
lion has been awarded.
“These grants will help
students get hands-on
training in a range of oc-
cupations that are vital to
the state’s continuing pros-
perity,” Combs said.
“We have diverse eco-
nomic sectors that require
technical skills for which
our workforce needs to be
trained. The grants ap-
proved today cover equip-
ment in programs such as
the oil and gas sector,
manufacturing, healthcare
and mechanics.”
