Archer City families and
community work together
to fill the local city pool
BY LAUREN ZOTZ
The Archer City Swim-
ming Pool is a popular place
every summer, offering kids
(and adults) a place to cool off
and socialize while getting some
exercise and having good, clean
fim. But with lake levels de-
creasing further, three Archer
City families knew that in order
to keep the pool open for the
2014 season, they would need
to take matters into their own
hands.
Using money out of their own
pockets as well as a lot of their
own time and energy, the fami-
lies (who wish to remain name-
less) coordinated their efforts
with the City of Archer City to
assure a the summertime get-
away is open this season for all
families of Archer City and the
area to enjoy.
One parent said, “We’re not a
big city with a mall or an activi-
ty center for the kids that are too
big for day care to go to during
the day. The library is great, but
they aren’t going to sit there all
day.”
Another parent commented,
“The pool is a social hub for kids
while school is out. Without it,
boredom will quickly set in, and
that can become a problem.”
The three families who spear-
headed the effort have had a lot
of support, including monetary
donations from other parents
and Archer City residents, stat-
ing, “Our three families could
not have made this happen with-
out the support of so many in the
community as well as the sur-
rounding area. It has truly been
a team effort.”
American National Bank &
Trust in Archer City is showing
their support as well, and held
a Cook off on the Square on
Wednesday, May 28th. All of
the proceeds will go toward the
cost of water hauling.
Generally most people in the
community seem to be onboard
with the pool opening, but some
are not. Those who don’t sup-
port it consider the pool to be
a luxury, claiming the water
should be used for necessities.
However, the water that was
donated from an individual’s
well outside of Archer County
would otherwise not have been
made available for public use.
As one parent commented, “If
someone wants water for some-
thing important to them, they
need to head up a committee and
have the water donated for their
cause.”
The Archer City Swimming
Pool Splash Day is scheduled
for Saturday, May 31st, from
l:00pm-6:00pm. (see related
