Shorter again took the hand-
off and sprinted 53 yards this
time and the Eagles led 20-0
with 7:45 left in the first half.
On the Lions next possession
Shorter intercepted a pass
and ran into the end zone but
a penalty negated the touch-
down and gave the Franklin
offense another chance, but
from there the Newton de-
fense held the Lions to minus
1 yard and forced another
punt. The Eagles then went
on a 6 play drive, Brandon
Johnson ran for 15 on the first
play, quarterback D. J. Dean
took over running for 9, and
then connected on 2 passes
the first for 23 yards to
Romondo Stewart, the 2nd
for 22 yards to Jace Thomas.
From there Kevin Shorter ran
to the 3 yard line, D.J. Dean
then finished the drive from 3
yards out and the Eagles lead
was 28-0 at the halftime
break.
The Eagles offense
started the second half and
with the mark of a champion
marched 68 yards in 9 plays
where D. J. Dean passed to
Keyaun Seastrunk for a 28
yard touchdown putting New-
ton with 35-0 Eagle lead with
7:42 left in the 3rd.

Newton County Courthouse
NOW OPEN FOR BUSINESS
Hundreds of people
gathered Saturday, Decem-
ber 8th to rededicate the
Newton County Courthouse.
The threatening rain forced
them to begin a little early, but
with the help of emcee, Sam
Collins it was a truly wonder-
ful event despite the rain
drops. Mr. Collins was inspir-
ing and heart warming bring-
ing a personal touch to the
day. County Judge Truman
Dougharty gave speeches re-
flecting on the last twelve
years with great emotion and
determination. He thanked
the people of Newton County
for giving him the opportunity
to see the project through to
the joyful end.
The ceremony was
encircled with lovely music
from NHS, DHS & BHS
Marching Bands, NES Chil-
dren’s Choir and the local
string ensemble “Connected.”
The music was beautiful and
the ensemble brought such

NEWTON 49 FRANKLIN 13
The Newton fans
came out in mass Friday
night and for the 5th time in
the history of Newton Foot-
ball, the Eagles have ad-
vanced to the semifinal round
of the State Playoffs, 3 of
those times the Eagles have
brought home State Champi-
onships. The Eagles dis-
patched the Franklin Lions
from the playoffs Friday night
49-13. The Lions came into
the game with one of the
most prolific offenses in 2012,
rolling up yards on the ground
with their old fashion Wing T
offense, but they hadn’t faced
an attacking defense like the
Newton Eagles brought to the
game.
Franklin opened the
game on offense and ran the
ball right at the Eagles de-
fense moving the ball from
Lions 32 to the Newton 26
yard line, but the Eagles de-
fense stiffened and held on a
4th down conversions at-
tempt.
The 2012 Eagles of-
fense has rolled up more
yards and points than any of-
fense in the history of Newton
football, and tonight they did-
n’t waste any time getting on
the scoreboard, on the 3rd
play of their opening posses-
sion Kevin Shorter took the
handoff from D.J. Dean and
went 59 yards to the end
zone, Dean ran in the conver-
sion and the Eagles led 8-0
with 6:04 left in the 1st quar-
ter.
The Franklin’s of-
fense was stifled by the Ea-
gles defense and after just 3
plays and 0 yards later
Franklin was forced to punt.
The Newton offense re-
sponded again this time
marching 45 yards in just
under 3 minutes but just
when it looked like the Eagles
would score easily the Lions
defense held the Eagles at
the 2 yard line and the ball
went over on downs.
Franklin’s offense responded
to the big play by their de-
fense and marched the ball to
the Newton 40 yard line but
the Eagles defense applied
the pressure and held on
again on another 4th down
conversion attempt. The Ea-
gles offense again struck
quickly, this time it only took 2
plays, Shorter ran for 27
yards on 1 st down then com-
pleted the drive on a 33 yard
run and Newton led 14-0 with
9:31 left in the half.
The Lion’s offense
again was knocked around by
the Newton defense, after an-
other 3 plays the lions were
forced to punt, this time from
their own 24 yard line. The
Eagles offense didn’t let up
and needed just 1 play, Kevin
