Chamber Banquet Set For Feb. 16
Ticket sales for the 2008 Newton County Chamber of Commerce
banquet are on sale at the organization’s office in the Powell Hotel.
Recycling Unit to be Here
The Recycling Station will be in Newton February 22 through
February 24 this month in its usual location.
Early Voting in 2 Sessions
Early voting for the March 4 Newton County primary election will be
in 2 sessions: February 19 until February 22 and February 25
through February 29. For More information, call the County Clerk’s

JNEC Board To Meet
Jasper-Newton Electric Cooperative, Inc. will hold the utility compa-
ny’s monthly Board of Directors meeting on February 19 at 4 p.m. at
the Jasper-Newton Electric office in Kirbyville.
Garden Club Meets Feb. 20
Newton Garden Club members will gather at the Powell Hotel at 9:30
a.m. Wednesday, February 20 in observance of Arbor Day. Molindia
Henson will lead the program with the help of the Methodist Christian
School Students. The group will proceed to the Christian Community
Life Center for the regular monthly meeting. Horticulturist Christie
Seals, owner of Pickle’s Nursery in Jasper will present the program
“Better Selection of Trees for Our Area.” Members are reminded to
bring gourds they have grown for judging. Hostesses for the meet-
ing are Kathleen McCorquodale, Jeanne Stivender, Bea Sanson,
Anne Dussetschleger, Louise Haag, Kristi Davis, and Betty
Simmons. The public is invited and encouraged to attend both
events. Also the Newton Garden Club has rescheduled their work-
day at the Powell Hotel Gardens until Monday, February 25 at 9:30
a.m. Plan to attend and prepare the gardens for Spring.
Library Offers New Information
Have you ever wanted to know the author of a particular book?
Maybe you wanted to know the next book in a series written by
James Patterson? Well, you can find the answers to these and other
similar questions. The Newton Public Library now has its catalogue
on line. You can go to www.newtoncountypubliclibrary.org, then click
on the icon that is marked “Catalogue.” The staff members of the
library are excited about being able to add this to their list of services
available for the citizens of the community.
Community Meeting Feb. 17
There will be a community meeting at St. Paul’s Methodist Church on
Sunday, February 17 at 3 p.m. For more information, contact Joanna
Powell, Edison Grant, or Edwina Lewis.
School Board To Discuss Attire
Student attire will be the focus of a special Newton Independent
School District open forum on Monday evening, February 18
beginning at 6 p.m. in the Newton Elementary Auditorium.
Parents are invited to attend in order to give valuable input to
NISD trustees regarding this matter. _
Friends of Library Open House Feb. 13
The Friends of the Newton County Public Library Will host an
open house to celebrate the group’s membership drive on
Wednesday, February 13 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the library.
Refreshments will be served. The Friends annual membership
drive begins on Friday, February 1 and will continue thoughout
the month of February. Membership in the organization is $5
annually to be a Friend, $25 to be a Darling, $50 to be a
Sweetheart, and $100+ to be a Cupid. Friends receive advance
notice of upcoming book sales. Proceeds fund projects and activ-
ities at the library. Also, scheduled on February 13 in addition to
the Open House is a meeting of the Friends, set for 1 p.m. and a
library board meeting at 2 p.m.

Marriage 101 for Couples
This seminar will help build and renew your marriage or guide
you in beginning your relationship. Presented by DETCOG in
partnership with Tri-County Head Start. It will be held at the
Lighthouse Ministry, 1013 Helen St. Jasper, Texas. If childcare is

Retired Teachers Meet Feb. 14
The Newton County Retired Teachers Association will meet
Thursday, February 14 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church. We will
be putting together our book project for the year. Hope to see
you there!
Burkeville Little League Registration
Burkeville Little League will be holding registration for children
ages 5-15 (players must be 5 before April 30) on the following
dates: Friday, February 15 from 3 p.m.-6 p.m. at Burkeville
Elementary; Saturday, February 16 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the
Cade Building, and Saturday, February 23 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at
the Cade Building. All Newton players not currently assigned to
a league are welcome to sign up through the Burkeville Little
League. All players signing up must bring a copy of their birth
certificate, a copy of their parent/gardian’s drivers’ license, and
proof of residency (i.e. a utility bill). The cost will be $30 for the
1st child nd $20 for each additional child. During sign up times
please inquire about volunteer and member positions available.
Thank you for supporting the Burkeville Little League and we look
forward to seeing all players soon.
Benefit Breakfast Feb. 14
Elijah’s Cafe and Advocates for Children, Inc. “A CASA Program”
are teaming up for a Special Valentine’s Day Breakfast on
February 14 from 7 a.m-9 a.m. Tickets are $10 and proceeds go
to help abused, neglected, and abandoned children in Southeast
Texas. Thank you for your participation. The CASA program is

4th HOUSE FIRE The mobile home of Bill Morgan of the Pine Grove Community (located down
the WPA Road) was totally destroyed by fire Sunday morning. According to the Newton County
Sheriffs Department, the call for assistance was received at 8:13 a.m. with the Newton Volunteer
Fire Department responding enroute at 8:21 a.m. Mr. Morgan, a native of Arizona, has lived in
Newton County for 16 years. He lost everything in the inferno that engulfed his home. Donations
of money to assist Mr. Morgan can be made at Orange Savings Bank. Material donations of
clothes, furniture, etc. can be brought to the site. For more information, call Camelia at 379-4483.
The cause of the fire is as yet unhewn. This is the 4th house fire in the Newton area in less than
1 month.

Robbed by
Armed Man
The liquor store located
between the Courthouse Square
and City Hall was robbed
Monday night, February 4 and
Sunshine Liquor was hit on
Wednesday night, but earlier in
the eveing.
On Monday at 8:50 p.m. a
Caucasian man dressed in dark
clothing with a bandana coverr
ing his face entered the store
and pulled a pistol. A total of
$400 was taken in the armed
robbery. The robbery at
Sunshine was also by a white
man of the same description.
$350 was taken on Wedneday
night.
No shots were fired and no
one was injured in either inci-
dent, according to City of
Newton Police Chief Tommy
Adams. The man was described
as between 5’11’ and 6 feet tall.
Security cameras were in opera-
tion on the crime scenes.
The burglary of Marshall’s is
not thought to have been related
to the Newton armed robberies.
