The emergency medical
service situation in Newton
County has been of concern
to not only citizens whose
lives depend upon adequate
care and transport during an
accident situation or illness
but has proven to be a recur-
rent problem with a revolving
door of providers for public of-
ficials. The absence or short-
age of transportation by
ambulance has been reported
by the Newton County Sher-
iff’s Office as well as the fam-
ily’s of patients that have
frequently been told that they
must take their loved to the
hospital by private vehicle.
Deputies and City of Newton
police officers have also car-
ried individuals to the nearest
medical facility.
Last Wednesday, July 14,
Newton County Commission-
ers Court approved a plan as
presented by Acadian Ambu-
lance Service to solicit and
sign up families to a subscrip-
tion plan. Jon K. Clingaman,
Operations Supervisor for the
Southeast Texas Operations
division of Acadian presented
the subscription proposition to
commissioners and the gov-
erning body unanimously ap-
proved the program.

“You can’t
Drive A

Machine!”
Crimes are never re-
ally funny but some are defi-
nitely more polite than others.
For example, take the bur-
glary of Whispering Creek
RV Park and Motel last
Wednesday night.
It seems 2 young
men had been in the office
visiting and had just inci-
dent^ and casually unlocked
a window. At about 10 p.m.
Wednesday night, 29 year
old Michael Patrick Griffin of
Beaumont and 22 year old
Matthew Roy of Kirbyville en-
tered the information and
check-in center through the
window that had been un-
locked. Taking the keys to
the vending machine and
laundramat, the young men
proceeded to open all of the
cash boxes that they could
access and took the monies
inside.
Mr. Griffin and Mr.
Roy then very thoughtfully re-
turned the “keys” to the
proper place and left the
premises without disturbing
or damaging any part of the
Whispering Creek complex.
Unfortunately, when
they reached their vehicle
which they had left parked a
distance away on the high-
way, new City of Newton Po-
lice Officer Matthew Love
and Sheriff’s Deputy Shane
Morrow were investigating
the car which they thought
had been deserted on High-
way 190.
Griffin and Roy
would have made a clean
getaway however if they had-
n’t put the vehicle keys back
where the vending keys be-
longed and were about the
try and start their transporta-
tion with the coke and laun-
dry machine keys!
Both were charged
with breaking and entering a
building as well as tampering
with and robbing a vending
machine.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT FIRE DESTROYS MOBILE HOME A 10:02 p.m. call Wednesday to
the Newton County Sheriff’s office was the first report of a blaze at 109 Wathall Road.
The mobile home at that address was already full of smoke and had flames coming out
the windows when the Newton Volunteer Fire Department trucks and personnel arrived
on the scene. Residents Kathleen Foster and Charles Hadnot Jr. and 3 children were not
home at the time but reportedly had experienced electrical problems the week before.
City of Newton police officer and Newton Volunteer Fire Department member Herbie Kel-
ley speaks with the family who lost all of their belongings in the blaze.
